A Note About Language
Domestic violence happens in all kinds of families: across different cultures,
different socio-economic groups, and different types of relationships. Sometimes,
the one perpetrating the violence is a man and sometimes it is a woman. Sometimes
the victim is a woman and sometimes it is a man. In this course, we may use
gender specific language at times. In these cases, we use “he”
to refer to a person doing the battering and “she” to refer to
the victim. This reflects research that tells us that most often domestic
violence is a man abusing a woman. However, this is not to say that all men
are batterers or to ignore the fact that domestic violence occurs against
men.
