Mount Airy Learning Tree's Computer Volunteer Group
Computer Volunteer Group Activities
Conducted on June 28, 2002
At Mount Airy Presbyterian Church
Homework Assignment- find out the IP address for www.phila.gov, hint go to source.
There was a discussion of Classes of internet protocol.
The City of Philadelphia is a class B network because the first 2 octets are defined as in 170.150.x.x
A class C network has the first three octets defined as in 198.184.180.x.x
DNS means Domain Name Server.
This works with a subnet mask to dole out and hide IP addresses within a network.-(Mr Jenkins is this correct?) The Subnet Mask hides the IP address
Public addresses can go through a router.
Private addresses cannot go through a router.
Across routers is an internetwork as in the City of Philadelphia.
This is an example of a private "local" IP address: 10.10.x.x
Discussion of our Computer Camp Deadlines.
By July 15th we will need
Internet cable connection- we will be using Comcast.
Router setup
Connection Sharing
Dell's imaged
and the B side of the room set up.
We will be going to The Germantown YWCA in August instead of the projected date of July.
The group split into two teams:
the configuration team- Adonica and Marty
testing team- Gloria, Eric, Susan, Wes and Walter.
A Router can be hardware or software. This is also true of a gateway.
There was a lecture concerning the near future design of the room and diagrams were drawn. They describe a segmented network as the next step in our development. From the internet, the connection would go through a gateway PC which will have a firewall, routing and sharing software and the one IP address issued by Comcast. From the gateway the connection will travel to a PC with 2 NIC-(Network) cards and then 2 wires would lead to two separate hubs these two hubs separate or segment the network. This is where the network is separated. Then the individual users pc come off these two hubs. This 2 hub/wire separation forms 2 secure networks. Information on one network cannot be accessed by pc's on the other network. Even though they share the same internet connection.
Other Future plans for the MAPC location include 4 separate segments. To be defined at a later date.
There is a group called the NTR whose goal is to have every child in the city have a computer in their home. If you would like the specific. Email me at toosoon782@aol.com
