Mount Airy Learning Tree's Computer Volunteer Group
Computer Volunteer Group Activities
Conducted on July 17, 2002
At Mount Airy Presbyterian Church
Computer Camp has started. There are 12 students learning various applications including Adobe's Photoshop and some HTML.
Comcast is scheduled to arrive and install cable on July 18th between 9 and 10 AM.
On Saturday, the group found the answer to the installation issues for CD Rom Drives in the Dells. They lack an antiquated driver that is hard to find without an internet connection. The Dells have 2 physical controllers but only the primary is useful without the 'old' driver. The Dells also have an old IBM bios OS/2 2.1x. These issues will be more profound as the years go by.
How to proceed with the Dells?
Make them lender machines until they become trash.
We have a Novel server(version 5.1) Wes installed the software Saturday.
Right now our Novel server has 2 NIC cards one with a public address and one with a private address. In the near future we will set up a gateway machine with firewall.
There was a wonderful Networking lecture in which Mr. Jenkins detailed the set up of his on the job network and the reasons for levels of permissions rights and administrative distinctions within the network. Issues in which users can and should be logged off.
In a Novel Server environment there is hierarchy of trustee rights they include: read, write, file scan, create, erase, modify and supervisor. Banyan is a server software company that no longer exists. It had a bindery system that tracked users and resources (printers and directories in the beginning and then expanded to include workstations and applications.)
New vocabulary words:
Context.
Domain-containers.
For the last 10 minutes of the meeting we broke down into memory upgrade people-(for machines 9 and 10) and clean up lab A cabling people.
For those of us with access to Novel Servers Mr. Jenkins would like us to get to a dos prompt and key in CX and enter.
******Reminder for Mr. Jenkins:
Windows98/Windows2000(?) CD for Internet sharing with valid registration numbers.
******Reminder for Walter Walker:
Norton2000 Works CD with registration numbers.
Next week we will work with the administrative utilities and create users on the network. Mapping to a local hard drive will also be discussed.
Next Meeting Friday, July 19, 2002
