Mount Airy Learning Tree's Computer Volunteer Group

Computer Volunteer Group Activities Conducted on August 7, 2002
At the Germantown YWCA

The Group arrived at 7 PM. Roll call in order of arrival: Mr. Jenkins, Susan, Marty, Stan, Steven, Barbara and Wes.

The person at the desk told us that the facility would close at 8:30 PM.

Our lecture concerned SPAM (unsolicited emailings over the internet) and ways to anaylze (find the correct origin), avoid and report the offending emails. Mr. Jenkins will send us a link to the central reporting agency.

We had to move a table from the room across the hall to set up three IBM machines (MS office pre-installed) in the middle of the lab. The first two had different Windows versions and the third had no '72 pin' ram. Due to the ram issue we thought that we had issues with a non functional monitor. We attempted to have a local network protocol. 10.10.0.2 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 On a light hearted note- when we first attemted to ping, Steve discovered that the Lan wires were not set up. For next week we need to remember the first IBM where Barbara sat is named Station 1. The second in the row where Steve sat has an ip of 170.115.37.133

There was a short discussion of IBM's "software glitches" in a production setting.
In record time, we broke down the string of machines that we were working on and tried to return the hardware to its previous place in the lab. Then returned the table to the other room. We left a few minutes after 8:30.

Reminders for Mr. Jenkins:
1. send students info on SPAM reduction agency.
2. feedback on Draft forms for testing machines checklist.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, August 7, 2002, 7-8:30 PM at the Germantown YWCA.
