"Day at the State" -
State of Stem Cells - advocacy day at state capital
March 15, 2005 - NEW DATE
Visit our state capital in Harrisburg, meet our congressional leaders and advocate for important issues that Hadassah supports. Let your voices be heard. For more information, contact Hadassah of Greater Philadelphia, 215-732-7100.
Hadassah not only supports Israel,
but also takes a stand on U.S. issues
As most of us know, Hadassah is a Zionist organization and plays
a crucial role in the welfare of the Jewish state. But Hadassah
is much more than that.
On the domestic side, Hadassah deals with a number of domestic
policy issues reproductive choice and the separation of
church and state are just two of them. We have a broad domestic
issue platform that also includes issues such as banning genetic
discrimination, advocating for the expansion of stem cell
research, promoting voter education and pushing for better health
care coverage.
What unites all of these issues is their importance to American
Jewish women and the need for Hadassah, as the largest Jewish
womens membership organization in the country, to lend the
voice of Jewish women to these key issues affecting our lives and
our families.
Many of our domestic policy initiatives are linked with
Hadassah's work in Israel. For example, while Hadassah is at the
forefront of groundbreaking stem cell research in Israel, we
advocate for the expansion of stem cell research here in the
United States. While Hadassah provides top-quality medical care
in Israel, we advocate for better access to medical care here in
the U.S. While Hadassah works for a better environment in Israel,
we advocate for sound environmental policies in the U.S.
Hadassah supports reproductive choice because we believe that it
is a right protected by the First Amendment, which guarantees the
freedom of religion and the separation of church and state that
protect us all. We believe that women should have the right to
make reproductive decisions within the context of their own
personal, religious, moral and ethical beliefs and free from
government interference. In other words, freedom of choice is a
matter of conscience, to be determined by each woman, in
accordance with her own values.
These and all other policy statements, both domestic and
international, are debated on and approved by the majority of
Hadassah's National Board. National Board members are our
members elected representatives and, as such, National
Board decisions are considered reflective of the general
memberships views. Of course, with 300,000 members, it is
inevitable that some of the membership will disagree with certain
policies adopted by the National Board.

Help monitor media
coverage of Israel
Hadassah of Greater Philadelphia and the Jewish Community
Relations Council
of Greater Philadelphia have been awarded a grant from the
IsraelNow Task
Force of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia to begin a
new
pro-Israel Media Monitoring and Response Project!
We need you to "stay on top" of what is said about
Israel "both positive
and negative" in the media in the 5-county area.
All you need to do is: 1) Read the paper 2) Alert the project
coordinator
who will be based at JCRC. This project is a great way to help
Israel
without leaving your home!
We must recruit at least 30 volunteers who will monitor their
local
newspapers. Very important to this project is to have Internet or
e-mail
access.
Send your name, home address and telephone number AND e-mail
address to:
BIGCHAPTER.PHILADELPHIA@HADASSAH.ORG. Please indicate which local
newspaper(s) serve your area.
Thank you for your cooperation. This will make Hadassah look even
better in
our community.

JCRC alert
1. Local school districts may be requested by groups to permit lectures on the Palestine situation to be held in our schools. Your help is needed in alerting the JCRC that these programs are being scheduled by calling Marlena Kleit, 215-832-0650. The Centennial School District made the decision that facilities could not be used for such programming.
2. Your help is needed to respond to the Bucks County Courier Times about its publication in the Letters to the Editor column of letters dealing with the Middle East from non-residents of Bucks County, sometimes from other states and even other countries, an attempt by pro-Palestinian activists to use the Courier Times to express their anti-Israel point of view. For more information call the JCRC Office at 215-677-8810.
For more information, contact Federation liaison Sheila Musicant.
