Thoughts From Bea...The Blessing of Time

We seem to be creatures of time. Alarm clocks awaken us to another calendar day in the year2007 or 5767 numbered in the common era or from our beginning as Jews. Inner clocks seem tuned to cosmic rhythms, but birthdays remind us of our humanity.

This year we marked the birthday of Hadassah, brought into being by Henrietta Szold in 1912. Since then, hundreds of thousands of women, and men have been given new purpose in life...improving health for millions of people. But would our founder ever have believed that she would be planting the seeds of growth for women's leadership, not only in medicine but in the arts, religion and in business?

This year also marks 20 years of life for Newtown Hadassah. Our members, women of all ages, includeentrepreneurs, academics, physicians, artists, attorneys, social workers and, thankfully, mothers and fathers raising a new generation of Jewish-American Zionist children. Astonishingly, this growth has occurred in a charming, pastoral setting, steeped in Quaker tradition, with but a small Jewish presence at the time of our beginning.

We believe that we can honestly say that the world is a better place for the presence of Hadassah. In a small way, our 20 years in Newtown have allowed us to grow in our personal relationships, our spiritual sensitivities and our outreach to the community, as well as the world at large.

May we grow from strength to strength.

Please check out Check it Out

There is a wonderful health awareness program that Hadassah sponsors teaching high school students the lifelong importance of taking good care of their bodies. While the focus has been on teaching breast self- examination and testicular self-examination, the broader goal is for young adults to incorporate healthy behaviors into their lives, and to develop a comfort in talking about health and personal issues.

Hadassah of Greater Philadelphia is planning to reach out to more public and private schools to bring this successful and well-respected program to our community. We need your help!!

The core of each 45-minute program is a breast or testicular cancer survivor telling their story followed by a presentation given by a health educator. If you are a survivor who would like to share your personal experience, or a nurse or physician with an interest in reaching our young adults, please let us know.

At each program, a Hadassah volunteer helps things go smoothly by greeting students, distributing handouts, collecting questions and by being a positive representative of our organization. Whether you are already an active member or attend an occasional meeting, Check it Out may be what you don't even know you're looking for.

Please check us out and let us know how you would like to be involved. Thank you!
