What is Annual Contribution?

Formerly known as Donor or Tzedakah, Annual Contribution is a member's annual contribution to Hadassah, separate from her annual dues. In our unit, all contributors are invited to an annual dinner.

Are my donations tax-deductible?

Yes, Hadassah is a registered nonprofit organization.

What is a quota?

A quota is the annual dollar amount that each unit (chapter) is expected to raise for Hadassah. If more than that amount is raised, the unit can qualify for special national awards. Each unit also has a membership quota and receives an award for surpassing that as well.

How much of the money we raise actually goes to Hadassah?

An amazing 92% of all monies raised goes directly to Hadassah programs and services, not to administrative costs.

When do I pay my dues?

Membership dues are paid annually, coinciding with the anniversary of your membership.

What is HMO?

HMO does not stand for Health Maintenance Organization, although it is related to health. HMO is the Hadassah Medical Organization, which includes the Hadassah hospitals at Mt. Scopus and Ein Karem in Jerusalem.

Does Youth Aliyah have something to do with making aliyah to Israel?

Not exactly, although many youths who are served by Youth Aliyah programs are recent immigrants to Israel. Youth Aliyah is a system of educational residential villages and day centers for at-risk youth, offering health education programs, vocational training, exposure to athletics and the arts, plus support and guidance to parents.

Is Young Judaea restricted to only Conservative youths?

No. Young Judaea is the oldest Zionist youth movement in the United States. Young Judaea reaches out to all Jewish youth -- Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist and unaffiliated.


Do I have to work outside the home in order to support Hadassah's
Career Counseling Institute?

Not at all! The Hadassah Career Counseling Institute is the leading Institute in Israel in the field of Occupational Psychology. The goal of the Institute is to assist both organizations and individuals in all points of contact within the world of work. Members can target special donations to the Institute's high school programs, assistance to olim (new immigrants), women's programs and other projects.

What is a special-interest group?

On the national level, there are many special-interest groups: attorneys' councils, educators' councils, Jewish deaf council, multicultural groups, nurses' councils, social workers'/mental health professionals' councils, singles, women in finance, women in the arts, and Young Women/Young Leaders.

What is Hadassah's position on Israeli politics?

Hadassah is a nonpartisan Zionist organization. That means we support Israel no matter who or what party is in power.

Does Hadassah actively lobby in the U.S.?

Yes. with more than 300,000 members, Hadassah works to educate ourselves and our communities about crucial issues of health, education and social welfare-genetic discrimination, domestic violence, breast cancer, threats to church and state separation, and a woman's right to choose.

Hadassah strongly believes in Tikkun Olam, the Jewish imperative to heal the world -- to leave this planet a little better than we found it.

Is JNF (the Jewish National Fund) part of Hadassah?

No, but Hadassah has partnered with JNF on many projects in Israel. Currently, JNF is addressing Israel's crucial need for water.
