Raffles for Hadassah

This year we will continue to raffle off something at most afternoon and evening meetings. In order for this fundraiser to be successful, we need the support of you, our members. The next time you go to your favorite restaurant, beauty parlor, nail salon, or store, ask for a gift certificate or an item that can be raffled off at a meeting . The monies raised from these raffles, go toward the wonderful projects of Hadassah. If you obtain an item or gift certificate, bring it with you to your next meeting and give it to Margie Kopins, Lorraine Blumenfield, Tessi Tuniman, or Sandi Berger. With 500 members in this unit, how can we not be successful in this endeavor?

The 2006-2007 Annual Contribution campaign

SUPPORT HADASSAH AND EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH

By now everyone knows that President Bush vetoed the bill that would have allowed federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. How very misguided he is!!

Unfortunately, the president doesn’t understand (among other things) that embryonic stem cells being used for
research are harvested from embryos that would have been discarded (mainly from fertility clinics) and from
laboratory created stem cell lines. We – on the other hand – will continue to focus our efforts in supporting Hadassah’s position on embryonic stem cell research.

Not so coincidentally, Hadassah is the 2006 recipient of the annual National Advocacy Award given by the Genetics
Policy Institute. We are receiving this award in recognition of being the volunteer organization that has done the
most to promote stem cell research in the U.S. Last spring, Hadassah mobilized its 300,000 members to participate in “SOS – State of Stem Cell.” Hadassah delegations visited legislators in all 50 state capitals. This is
obviously a well- deserved honor. (No prejudice here!!)

FYI – Human embryonic stem cells have the potential to revolutionize the treatment of illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury, Alzheimer’s, MS, ALS, juvenile diabetes, cancer and more. Another of the diseases to be recently added to this list is macular degeneration.

Even though our focus will be on embryonic stem cell research, we must not forget other important Hadassah projects such as the Hadassah Medical Organization, breast cancer awareness, Hadassah College Jerusalem,
Youth Aliyah, Young Judea, Hadassah International and partnership with the Jewish National Fund. Your generous contribution can help us reach this year’s goal, which can go a long way in sustaining the many worthwhile and
life saving Hadassah programs in Israel and the U.S.

The 2006-2007 Annual Contribution campaign will officially “kick-off”our campaign at our Membership Dinner
on October 5th at Spring Mill Manor. To make things more interesting,
there will be one drawing for a special prize among those who pay that night
and another drawing among those who turn in their completed pledge cards
at the dinner. Subsequently, there will be a mailing of pledge cards to all
who were unable to attend.

Your money goes not only towards the large, very visible programs, but also
toward the mundane, everyday expenses like electric, telephone, office supplies,
etc. These are not things we usually think about, but the bills keep coming.

Please remember that this contribution is over and above your dues.
To those who always contribute, we thank you and encourage you to consider
increasing your donation. To those who have not donated in the past, please
consider whatever you can afford. Pledges can be satisfied by using an Israel Bond
as payment. Contributions can also be paid by credit card, check, or even cash,
and we are happy to have you pay in installments, if you prefer.

We need your support!!

A special thank you to Elinor Pressel who is this year’s first contributor
– and she wasn’t even solicited!!

Questions? Please contact Janna Walsh or Enid Waldman. We are very proud
of last year’s very successful campaign and look forward to the same (if not better)
response from everyone this year.

- Annual Contribution Co-Chairs, Janna Walsh, Enid Waldman

OUR BULLETIN NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT!

Everyone of our 500 members love to read our bulletin,
but did you ever think about how expensive it is to process
this masterpiece? It now costs $750 for each issue we mail.
The money we raise for Hadassah goes to Hadassah; therefore,
we need a special generous contribution from each of you
allocated specifically for the bulletin.

This is where you come in. If each of you could send us a donation
of whatever you could spare, and then some, this certainly would
defray our costs. We suggest $18-$36-$54 or a spectacular $100,
or any amount you want to give to enable us to continue to print
our fantastic bulletin. Your name will appear each month as a contributor.
Thank you so much for your participation.

Please do help us and send your contribution, made payable to
Newtown Hadassah to Brenda Weiser or to Sheila Musicant.

TODAH RABAH!

Give a Youth Aliyah child a gift of a bar or bat mitzvah

A bar or bat mitzvah gift of $500 enables a student from Ramat Hadassah Szold in Israel and his/her family to participate in Hadassah's Joy of Judaism program. This program supports activities focusing on the traditions, culture and customs of Judaism. The program's motto, "...and you shall teach your children diligently," is taken directly from the Torah.

Your gift can be made in honor or in memory of a loved one, to celebrate a special occasion or to help teach tzedakah to a bar or bat mitzvah child in America by sharing a portion of their celebration gifts received from their family and friends.

This gift will provide individual bar or bat mitzvah lessons, traditional Judaic attire and an appropriate outfit for the occasion. It will enable a student from Ramat Hadassah Szold to celebrate with pride their bar or bat mitzvah with family and friends.

You will receive a beautiful inscribed certificate sutable for framing in grateful acknowledgment of your important gift. For more information, contact Joan Becker.

Firstrust puts its money
where your heart is!

By banking with Firstrust Bank, Hadasah will receive cash bonuses through a program called Affinity Banking, a partnership between Firstrust Bank and Hadassah. If 10 or more members participate, Firstrust will make a donation, based on account type, for each new deposit account opened when Affinity Banking is mentioned at the opening of a new account.

Firstrust will continue to contribute, on an ongoing basis, for funds that remain on deposit through an annual percentage contribution. The ongoing annual contribution will be equal to 1% of the total interest earned for ALL accounts credited to Hadassah. New Yahrzeit Payment Plan

Who will say kaddish for your loved one? Hadassah offers a perpetual yahrzeit
that includes a beautiful certificate for the family and the annual recitation of the
kaddish in the name of your loved one in the chapel of Hadassah Hospital, known
for its Chagall stained-glass windows. The man or woman for whom kaddish is
recited does not need to be a Hadassah member.

A new payment plan for yahrzeit orders is very simple. You can pay by check or credit
card: either $100 each month for 10 months, $250 quarterly for a year, or $1000 in one
payment. Each deeducction serves as a donation, and the donor receives a tax letter
each time a deduction is made.

Your purchase of a perpetual yahrzeit in Israel counts as your annual contribution to
Hadassah for the year and also counts toward Newtown Hadassah's assigned quota.

You can send your order form to Janna Walsh. For more information, contact Bea Tannenbaum.
