FIND OUT MORE...

Email list server information:

An email list server is the simplest way and easiest way for members of a group to keep in touch using email. There are two main reasons for making this statement:
  1. There is only one list to maintain instead of each individual keeping and updating a list on their computer. And only one email address to use to email everyone on the list.
  2. People can join the group themselves and remove themselves from the list - without intervention from the moderator (unless the moderator is a control freak and sets up the list requiring approval). This makes it extremely easy to maintain once the list is created.

Joining is even easier... Simply address an email to salemcrew-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. That's it! No subject or text in the body of the message is required.

To stop getting messages from the list send an email to salemcrew-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com (again, without subject or body).

To send a message to everyone on the list, simply address your email to salemcrew@yahoogroups.com. Then enter your subject and type the message in the body of the email like normal. The email will go out to all the email addresses on the list - including you. That way you can be reassured that your message actually did get sent.

You do not have to be a member of the club to join the list server. Feel free to subscribe to the list and check things out if you are just curious.

There is no cost involved with joining, and you can't even get wet.

YahooGroups offers a number of additional services to Yahoo members besides email lists. These include calendaring, file sharing, polling, etc. If you do not already have a Yahoo username, you are encouraged to do in order to take advantage of these services and others found at the following web site: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/salemcrew/

Click on "Join this Group!" to join the group and discover all the benefits. It's free! (except you have to put up with some advertising here and there).

Meetings

This group likes to be on the water more than going to meetings. So, meetings are more a matter of necessity and don't happen very often. There is a somewhat regular meeting that takes place in the Spring before the rowing season gets going. It's more of a "let's get together and get excited about rowing again" meeting with some business thrown in for good measure.

Rowing times/schedule

There really is no schedule unless you signup for the summer crew workshop(s) sponsored by Willamette University. Club boats are stored at a self-service storage business which is open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM. You cannot take out club boats before that time, and they must be returned, gear stowed, and you out the gate by closing time. That goes for privately owned boats that are stored with the club boats as well.

Beginners wanting to learn sculling (2 oars) need to get with an experienced member willing to instruct them 1st using an erg (rowing machine) and then in a double.

If you are interested in learning crew (1 oar) you should subscribe to the list serve and/or keep checking back to these pages for more information about the Crew Workshop sponsored by Willamette University in the summer.

Rules

  • Beginners are not allowed to take out single boats without a qualified club member present and some prior training.
  • All rowers are encouraged to row with a buddy - either in another single or with you in a double (or quad or eight). This is for your own safety and because it is easier to get these long boats off and on the racks when you have two people lifting. Remember, a river - especially a swift river - can be a dangerous thing. Besides that, we row facing backward which makes it difficult to notice other boats, bridges, rocks, and logs floating just under the surface. Also, the water is very cold most of the year! If one does get into trouble you'll be glad someone was around to help.
  • I'm sure there are more rules, but I'm not going to get into them now...
