Visability Improved at 'Four-Way' Intersection
Responding to numerous suggestions from Club members, the City of Sanibel took on the project of improving visability at the northeast corner of the intersection of Periwinkle Way and Causeway Blvd. As a result, cyclists coming on-Island riding the path along Causeway Blvd. intending to cross Periwinkle, will now be able to see traffic from the East End departing the Island. And those vehicles will be able to see the cyclists. It may not be the ultimate solution, but it is a big step forward. Thanks to the Department of Public Works for the improvement. Construction Completed on Tarpon Bay Road Path
The extensive improvements for the Shared Use Path alongside Tarpon Bay Road, north of Periwinkle have now been completed. The new path includes a minimum of two feet of separation from the roadway and is eight feet wide. As an extra bonus, the 'rumble strips' that cyclists have complained about for years, have been removed. Dunlop-Wooster Path Extension Completed and Now Open
The new Dunlop/Wooster path has now been completed including striping, crosswalks, signage and lighting. This exciting and long-needed new path begins on the north side of Periwinkle at St. Michael’s Church, proceeds east on Periwinkle, north along Dunlop, then west along Dunlop and Wooster to Palm Ridge Road. Thus, the Library, City Hall, and BIG Arts will all be conveniently accessible by bikes. Captiva Connection Path Completed
The City of Sanibel has completed construction of the new path alongside of San-Cap Road in the 'Santiva' area. The new path extends the existing path along San-Cap Road to the Blind Pass Bridge allowing cyclists and other users to safely navigate between the paths on Sanibel and the widened road lanes of Captiva Drive. The Sanibel Bicycle Club has long been an advocate for completion of this section of path. With $5,000 in funding from the Club's Sanibel Trails-In-Motion Fund, the Club joined with the City of Sanibel to make it happen. Total cost of the project was approximately $63,000. Path Welcoming Center Progressing
Construction has begun on the proposed Path Welcoming Center that will be constructed on land owned by the Muench family alongside Periwinkle, between the Shell Shop and Huxter's. The final City permits were issued in mid-December. The project has been ably led by Bike Club Board member Tom Sharbaugh. Once completed, the facility will include a rest area with shade, benches, a drinking fountain and signage displays providing information about the historical Rutland home and grave sites, local ecology, a path system map and directions to Island locations. It'll be a great addition to the Path System. Many organizations are contributing, either cash or 'pro bono', including the Club's Sanibel Trails-in-Motion, SCCF, Sanibel Historical Village/Museum, Sanibel Beautification Committee, Periwinkle Partnership and the Sanibel-Captiva Chamber of Commerce. |
