In 1949, my parents, Bill and Ella Bigenho began the purchase of Great Duck Island (GDI), approximately 1 1/2 miles long by 1/2 mile wide, located about 9 miles east of Bass Harbor, Mt. Desert Island, Maine and nearby Acadia National Park. We stayed with the lighthouse families until our cottage was built in 1951.

In 1953, my parents dug up the first of two pirate treasures buried on Great Duck Island.

While my parents did later sell off most of the island, I retained my GDI property until the early 1980's. In 1983, the Nature Conservancy Maine Chapter purchased GDI and continues to maintain the island as a nature preserve. In 1998, the College of the Atlantic purchased the US Coast Guard property (ten acres located at the south point of GDI). The USCG continues to maintain the automated lighthouse.
