The Star Trek movie games

(because only the even-numbered ones are good)

April 13 - New York 4, Washington 1. The Freedom take an early lead, but then panic after New York equalizes and are ineffective thereafter. Carrie Moore makes a sensational strip of the ball from Tiffeny Milbrett, about the only highlight of this game other than Monica Gerardo's goal. However, the Freedom never again give up four goals in a game nor lose a game when they've taken the lead.

April 21 - Washington 2, San Jose 1. San Jose scores first, but Washington comes back to win against the defending champions as Bai Jie and Abby Wambach break the offside trap and give Meredith Beard an easy scoring chance. It proves to be the first of four comeback wins by the Freedom. Carrie Moore makes a stunning shot on goal that is barely parried by LaKeysia Beene.

April 27 - Atlanta 1, Washington 0. Missing Abby Wambach to national team duties, the Freedom are unable to score but nevertheless hold on for ninety minutes against the team picked by many to win it all this year. Alas, they give up a goal with seconds left in stoppage time for a gut-punch of a loss.

April 27 - Washington 3, San Diego 0. Short Anne Makinen this time, the Freedom erupt for three goals and shut down the top-scoring team in the WUSA. Dawn Greathouse gets the first shutout of her professional career, and Abby Wambach gets her first professional goal.

Hitting bottom

The worst period of the season

May 11 - Philadelphia 3, Washington 1. Makinen misses the first half with a groin pull, and the Freedom put on a lackluster performance on the road against the league leaders.

May 18 - Washington 1, Carolina 1. Siri Mullinix takes over in goal and helps the Freedom hold onto a tie against the eventual Founders Cup winners.

May 26 - San Jose 2, Washington 0. The CyberRays dominate the Freedom at home.

June 1 - Boston 0, Washington 0. Siri Mullinix all but singlehandedly earns Washington a tie as she sets the WUSA record for saves in a game.

Turning it around

Steffi arrives, Mia returns, and things start looking up

June 8 - Philadelphia 1, Washington 1. Without star and captain Kelly Smith for the first time, the Charge are in disarray but save a tie with a late goal. Steffi Jones makes her first appearance.

June 12 - Washington 2, Boston 1. Mia Hamm returns and scores the winning goal seven minutes later to seal the Freedom's second comeback win.

June 15 - Washington 4, San Diego 0. The Freedom control the first half but only score once, then hold off the Spirit attack early in the second half. They finally score three easy goals late as the Spirit overcommit forward while trying to come back. Lindsay Stoecker suffers an ACL tear just before halftime and is lost for the rest of the season.

June 22 - Carolina 3, Washington 1. Washington is thoroughly outplayed in their first game without Lindsay. Bai Jie gets her first goal of the season late to make the score respectable. Carrie Moore man-marks Birgit Prinz on her own initiative. The Freedom will not lose again this season until the Founders Cup.

Starting the run

The Freedom begin their undefeated streak

June 29 - Washington 4, New York 1. The score from the season opener is reversed as the Freedom dominate the hapless Power. Mia scores two sensational goals while Carrie shuts down Tiffeny Milbrett and gets her first votes for Player of the Week as a result. Siri breaks a bone in her hand in the first half, so Erin Fahey takes over in goal.

July 3 - Washington 2, Atlanta 1. Emmy Barr gets a goal and an assist in a physical battle. Carrie shuts down Charmaine Hooper but is rewarded with an elbow to the face that draws blood. Jim Gabarra is ejected for complaining about the referee not protecting his players.

July 14 - Washington 1, Philadelphia 1. Both sides come away claiming a moral victory in this game: the Charge for again pulling out a tie late, the Freedom for tying the league leaders despite missing some key players. Mia starts for the first and last time this season and misses a penalty kick early on that in retrospect could have given the Freedom the season title. Carrie earns raves for shutting down current Player of the Week and eventual MVP Marinette Pichon.

Clinching the playoffs

The Freedom play five games in fifteen days that will decide their playoff fate

July 21 - Washington 3, San Jose 2. Missing Mia and Abby, the Freedom manage to score three goals anyway and leave Spartan Stadium with the biggest win in their history against a team they're competing with for a playoff spot. Siri Mullinix returns to goal. Emmy Barr is hurt and misses her first minutes of the season.

July 24 - Washington 1, Boston 1. Abby Wambach and the Freedom get their first goal of the season off a corner kick. The Breakers put on a furious offensive show in the second half, but Siri holds them off well enough to keep the tie. This is the last time the Freedom will not win a game until the Founders Cup.

July 27 - Washington 1, San Diego 0. San Diego, having just fired their coach, put in a lackluster game, but the Freedom only manage to squeak out a victory, though on a beautiful teamwork goal that starts with a Jacqui Little steal and ends with Mia passing to Abby behind the defense for an easy put-away.

July 31 - Washington 5, Carolina 2. The Freedom erupt offensively against a shorthanded Courage team in the second half, scoring three goals in eight minutes as Mia Hamm, Bai Jie, and Abby Wambach all have Player of the Week performances. It's the Freedom's third comeback win of the season.

August 4 - Washington 3, Atlanta 2. In one of the best games in WUSA history, the Freedom come from behind for the fourth time and clinch a playoff spot in stoppage time with Pu Wei's first goal of the season, heading in a Mia Hamm corner kick. Both of the other two Washington scores are Goal of the Year candidates, with Mia splitting the entire Atlanta defense to score on her own, then Bai Jie heading in another Hamm corner kick from an impossible angle right along the baseline. Mia earns Player of the Week for her three-goal, three-assist performance, arguably the most impressive 90 minutes of play in WUSA history.

Finishing it off

The Freedom end the season and get into the playoffs

August 10 - Washington 4, New York 2. It's a meaningless game, but the Freedom put on a good show, nonetheless. Mia makes a jaw-dropping free kick for a score, while Jacqui Little emulates Mia by running through the New York defense for a goal of her own.

August 17 - Washington 1, Philadelphia 0. The temperature is 120 degrees on the field at Villanova Stadium, but the Freedom outlast the Charge on their own turf, winning on a goal scored by Monica Gerardo and assisted by Jacqui Little, who does a magnificent job of retaining the ball while surrounded by Charge defenders, then passes it off to an open Mo. Carrie shuts down Pichon for the second time to seal the win.

August 24 - Carolina 3, Washington 2. The dream comes to an end as the Freedom's defense is uncharacteristically porous, giving up three goals for only the fourth time in the season and only the second time following the midseason turnaround. Mia Hamm scores another stunning turn-shoot-net goal, and the Freedom follow with a furious offensive surge but are unable to equalize despite numerous chances.
