This document is intended to provide a summary of best practices for playing Tiger Tag. Because Tiger Tag is a free choice collection of waypoints instead of a predetermined route, you will not see best practices on how to enter and execute a route on your GPS. The most important GPS skills in playing Tiger Tag is the ability to select “Go To Nearest” one handed, while in flight and watching the “Dist to next” to make sure you are in the cylinder before heading out to the next point.
Download waypoints
1. Tiger Tag web site http://home.comcast.net/~TigerTag04
2. Study them – know generally where all the major waypoints are located (really helps when you are flying)
Get your GPS setup correctly
1. Set track log options (pg 29)
a. Sampling interval – memory dependent (76S: 3-5 seconds good)
b. Recording – “Stop when full”
2. Set Map options (if available)
a. Show track line – very handy to see your drift and to back track to previous areas where you were in thermals.
b. Show Heading line – I like it because I can see my heading to the next point or previous thermal exactly.
3. Set your Approach and Arrival alarm to .25 mi. (if available)
a. I really like this feature. It is very handy when you are near the tag, focused on the flying, and hear the alarm go off. This alarm is different than the Proximity alarm.
Clear your track log before
launching
Clearing your tracks keeps your GPS memory empty and ready to track your next epic flight.
Which point do I go to?
1. Know generally where the waypoints are located from the air.
2. Get really good at setting “Go To Nearest” in flight.
Important! Take the time to set your “Go To”
How do I know when I have
tagged the point?
1. Do not rely on sight!!!
2. Watch to the “Dist to next” and/or listen for the Approach and Arrival alarm.
3. Wait several seconds to ensure a couple of track points are captured (how long to wait is dependent on interval setting).
1. Upload your track log to your computer
2. Save the file with the following format:
fname lname mm-dd-yy
Where fname is your first name, lname is your last name and mm-dd-yy is the date of your flight.
3. Email the file to TigerTag04@comcast.net
