"Dust bunnies on parade (aperture test)"

I took 16 photographs at f/5 through f/29 with the 18-70mm "kit" lens at 70mm ISO 200 of blue sky with a D70 that has a known dust bunny.

Here are 16 200x200 pixel 100% crops centered on a dust bunny.
The apertures for each swatch are:
55.66.37.1
891011
13 141618
20222529

As you can see the dust bunny isn't really obvious until you reach f/20.

The next set of swatches are the same crops after desaturation, auto levels, and then a manual adjustment to make them the same brightness.

Now, of course, the dust bunny is more obvious.
It is interesting to see direct evidence that something on the surface of the IR filter is far enough away from the CCD sensor site so the angle of light, which is affected by the aperture, matters.

   Thanks Bill,

That's a very interesting and informative test. I've often wondered how small an aperture you have to go before dust becomes most visible. I took a dust test shot yesterday at f/22 and found that I've definitely accumulated a few more spots that weren't there several months ago... but I've never noticed them in any recent photos I've taken.

Of course now that I'm shooting more wide angle shots (just got the 10.5 fisheye and I'm waiting on a Tokina 12-24), I will have more photos with lots of sky...which is where you really seem to notice the dust.

It's pretty easy to fix the spots in Photoshop, but that gets old after a few photos. The dust reference thing is kind of annoying as well since you have to keep updating it. I guess it's time for my D70's first cleaning.

   Sean,

Slightly off topic (but hey, I'm the original poster )
I did a quick analysis of the shots I took over a fairly active 2 week period.
FNumberCount
3.5135
3.837
4314
4.269
4.5285
5110
5.6143
6.3213
7.1307
8248
9121
1058
1112

The results don't suprise me since I usually shoot aperture at 7.1
Sometimes wider was necessary due to low light.
Other times I varied from 7.1 for depth of field.
It's interesting I never went above f/11
I guess that's why I haven't felt compelled to clean until recently.

I can't count higher than 11, but I know I have dirty cameras too...

I don't have the statistics to back it up, but I am sure I am in the same boat... what is f/22 for anyway? =o)

Wow, thanks for the information. This solves a mystery I have been wondering about since I got my D70. Great test. This should be in the D70 manual.

Great composition, subject matter, color, pattern, texture. The photos really moved me! It's nice to see someone who truly understands art. Your use of negative space really astounds me. The simplistiy is overwelming, but not too much in your face. It's like the image is shouting "I'm a f***ing dust bunny and your not!" but in a nice kind of way.

This is by far your best work yet...keep up the good work:)
