"I take pictures too! :-)"

LAST EDITED ON 03-Jul-05 AT 05:24 AM (GMT 2)

I think some Nikonians may believe I never take a "real" picture.
So I thought I'd share this from my afternoon hike.
(Mods: Yes, I know it's the wrong forum but this is where I'd like to share this "news" )

D70 with Sigma 100-300mm f/4 and Sigma 1.4x TC @420mm f/16 1/500s ISO 400 (hand held)
with exposure compensation of -1 1/3EV and SB-800 (TTL-BL)

This is a 50% crop from a raw file processed for contrast and with a very small amount of sharpening.

I hope you enjoy it almost as much as the charts and graphs!

Bill

That's a pretty good shot for hand held, f/16, 50% crop....

Dunno, Bill. Maybe your charts and graphs are better "exposed"...

   Kerry,

Thanks!
The lens deserves a tripod but mostly I use it hand held in the field.
When I first got it I had to practice a bit to improve my technique.
Notice that the subject was close enough that I could add some light with my SB-800.
At ISO 400 I was able to get 1/500s and reasonable depth of field with f/16.
Finally, to keep the white from blowing out I had to back off with exposure compensation of -1 1/3EV.

This is not my typical shot! But I like the results!

Regards,
Bill

   Hi Bill

Thanks for posting the image on the D70 forum.

It's great to actually see an image for a change (although I do appreciate the graphs too)

Maybe the D70 forum IS the place to post our favourite images taken with our D70's (and D70s's) from time to time - although I'm sure the moderators will beg to differ.

   Very nice Bill!!
I much enjoy seeing one of your pictures here. Exposure is perfect there is still detail in the shadows, and the white tail isn't burned out either. Nice shot man!

Am I guessing correctly that this would be the lens I sometimes see advertised as APO Macro or something simular?

BTW what do they mean when they say 50% crop?

I'm guessing that what you posted is 800 pixels wide.
So my question is how did you arrive at this size?

Did you go from 3008 pixels wide and cut it to 1504 wide (50%), and then resize it to 800 for the forum?

Or did you cut the origional till it was 1600 pixels wide and then resize it to 800 pixels (50%)?

Or did you cut the origional till it was about 535 pixels and then resize it to 800? (50% of 535 = 267.5 || 535 + 267.5 = 802)

-I hope these questions aren't too silly. I read somewhere else about a High-Speed crop, and another guy talking about a 100% crop. I feel slow in picking up this terminology.

Thanks again for shareing a great picture with us Bill.

   Alex,

Your question isn't silly at all.

First I cropped to 3000x2000 because those extra 8 pixels are a pain.
Then I resized to 1500x1000 making it 50%.
Finally I cropped an 800x600 piece out of the 1500x1000; a 50% crop.

Does that make sense?

I would have done a 100% crop but wanted to show the entire dragonfly and stay within the 800 pixel limit.

   Alex,

This is not one of the Sigma lenses with "Macro" in the designation.
Here's some more info on the lens APO 100-300mm F4 EX IF HSM

Usually a zoom lens with a "Macro" designation is designed to allow closer focusing; but at 6ft (2m) it does pretty well!

Bill

   Thanks Bill,

I think I get it about the crop. Too many numbers floating in my head at the moment

Oh and about the lens too. Nice to see what that lens can do, I bet the HSM is nice

Cheers

Excellent image, Bill! Or as we here in France, "impressionnant!"
