"Circular polarizer example of too much"

Here is an example where I overused a circular polarizing filter:

12-24mm Nikkor at 24mm f/5 1/1000th second (not post processed, just resized)

What do you mean by "overused"? The color of the sky?

   Sean,

Yes, the sky is too dark, almost back; rather than a dark blue.
I consider it operator error on my part.

You can see the effect change of the polorizer as you rotate it looking through the lens. So, all you would have had to do would be to back off a bit...right?

   Sean,

Yes, it's just an example of what happens if you are careless.
I really should have found a good side by side example

IMHO, the problem with this image is not the effect of a polarizer. The problem lies in the underexposure of the whole image.

The white building fooled the meter, and produced an exposure which yielded something nearer to grey than to white.

If you had compensated for the white building (+1 compensation, maybe), the whole image would have looked intense but still natural. And also the sky would have been a dark blue instead of black.

   Hi Bill,

I did a little tweak just to get the building white, hope you don't mind. It makes the sky a bit better but it is still a reminder to look at all areas of the viewfinder before pushing the button.

May the light be with you

I'll bet that building isn't white - it's actually grey, but I do like the white picture better.

   Hi,

I went back and looked at the histogram again. The shot is definately underexposed but you are kind of right. I would guess it is slightly off-white rather than grey. The white makes it more dramatic though and the bricks are a nice warm colour.
In my humble opinion.

May the light be with you

Dave, how are you able to look at the histogram when you did not take the shot? I thought that was an in camera thing. Newbe here!

And too, if you don't mind? How are you able to identify the correct color of a photograph from the histogram that is basically a grey scale??

Sean

   Dave,

Good try, but remember, I was there!

I intentionally did the minimum on the initial post.

Here is the same image corrected for exposure and slightly for white balance:

It's much improved but really the sky is still too blue.
This is because I over polarized and not because it's underexposed.

Respectfully,
Bill

Perhaps my first example misses the point because the sky is so uniform it's easy to think it's simply underexposed.

Here is another shot from the same day.

This is not underexposed. The tower is almost blown out!
The sky in the lower right is light blue but the upper sky is too dark.
Again, IMO, I overpolarized this shot.
(In bright sunlight it is pretty hard to review on the LCD, isn't it?)

Bill

Edited to add shooting info:

I tend to use my polarizers to reduce reflections only. Only on rare occasions do I use one for landscapes and scenic shots. I like to keep things as real as possible.
