Princess Party

Wow. Abby is 4! Unbelievable.

We celebrated the occasion with a Princess party. We hand delivered the invitations (a scroll rolled and put into a glass slipper) to 8 of Abby's church friends about two weeks ago. All were able to attend and were encouraged to dress as a prince/princess.

Preparations for the party included Larry making a castle turet and archway out of cardboard boxes, a balloon decorated ballroom, a royal picnic area, a craft area where the children made picture frames, a balloon pumpkin patch, a shoe search, a Cinderella poster and a Cinderella cake.

When the children arrived, they went through the arch, posing briefly for a photo, through the ballroom, and into the craft area. There they decorated magnetic Princess/Prince frames with homemade stickers (used my new Xyron 510!), glitter glue, and gems. After they were finished, they colored Disney Princess pictures while they waited for the other children to finish.

After the craft, we headed to the picnic area for our Royal Feast. We dined on star-shaped sandwiches, graham crackers, apples & strawberries & yogurt dip, star- & heart-shaped cheeses, baby carrots, and wet our palates with raspberry pink fizz juice.

Once all our royalty had finished their meals, we moved to the basement for games. Abby's Fairy Grandmother sang "Bibbity Bobbity Boo" with the children and told them about her magical pumpkin patch. Each child chose a pumpkin (an orange balloon with green ribbon "vines" and a prize inside), said, "Bibbity, Bobbity, Boo!" and popped the balloon to see what was inside. After the patch was bare, the kids found a basket of left shoes. The children each selected one and searched through the basement to find the match. Wearing their newly found shoes, we moved to the "Put the flower in Cinderella's basket" game. Although they had a bit of difficulty understanding the concept of a blindfold (we had quite a bit of peeking!), the Princesses and Prince did a good job collecting the flowers in the basket. We then used the bean bags that Abby helped Mommy make to do a bean bag toss. By this time, we were ready for cake!

The kids sang a rousing version of Happy Birthday and Abby blew out her candle. They all seemed to enjoy the strawberry cake and vanilla ice cream.

Post-dessert, we headed to the ballroom for a bit of "glass slipper" gift giving. (We used the glass slipper to play hot potato to decide which present to open). Abby quite enjoyed getting gifts. She loved each one and remembered to say, "Thank You" on her own most of the time. After she finished opening her gifts, Abby handed out the treat bags and books to her friends. We read a few pages of the story as the parents arrived to take the children home.

Kids took home a special cookie wand, a Cinderella book, a pair of shoes (they had to find one of them in the shoe search game), 2 bracelets, their picture frame and photo, and a few other odds and ends.

It was quite fun but very very very very exhausting. I made the comment afterward that next year's party may well be at Chuck E Cheese!
