Abingdon Bicyclists

What are we?

Do you enjoy riding your skinny tire bike on the roads around Abingdon?

Would you like to have the company of other riders on your rides?

We are a small group of bicyclists who live around Abingdon, Va who are setting up a bicycle club. At this time this consists of a list of about 20 bicyclists and a ride calendar. We hope to find more interested bicyclists and to continue to develop a ride calendar that meets the interests of all of us.

Our objective is to improve our own bicycling experiences and promote local bicycling. We can go a long way in doing this by knowing who the other riders are (our list of riders) and by encouraging each other to get out and ride (our ride calendar).

Most rides start and end near Abingdon because that's where we live. Hopefully as other cyclists from Washington Co. and adjacent areas join us they will suggest additional ride options.

Currently the calendar contains only road rides. Off road riders are invited to join our group and list rides on our calendar. If you are interested in participating in any of our rides or would like to find bicyclists with similar riding interests to you, please join us on any ride or contact me.

Our Ride Calendar

We are attempting to update our ride calendar monthly. The current calendar of our rides can be viewed on the Ride Calendar page.

Nearby Bicycling Options

Some of the various recreational bicycling options in and near southwest Virginia are listed on the Nearby Bicycling Options page. This includes eastern Tennessee, western North Carolina and possibly adjacent parts of Kentucky and West Virginia. The goal is to identify events that are within an easy day's drive of Abingdon, VA and the Tri-cities area of Virginia and Tennessee. Multiple day events and rides that are of particular interest to me but are farther away may also be listed. This list is primarily road rides although a couple of scenic trails are included.

Links to Tours and Touring Companies

Not all bicycling needs to be done in circles near home. There are many options for bicycle touring. Click here for some of my favorite touring sites. Contact me if you have some others you would like to add.

Bicycle Advocacy and Rules of the Road

"Cyclists fare best when they act and are treated as drivers of vehicles." -- John Forester

How should you ride on the road? What do the bicycle advocates such a John and others say and what does the state laws say? Bicycle Advocacy and Rules of the Road has links to various sites that should increase your knowledge and awareness of cycling laws, advocacy, and issues.

Miscellaneous Sites of Interest

Some sites that various members of our group have suggested as interesting.

That's all!
