Schedule! We don't got to show you no stinkin' schedule.
We have an un-schedule. We get together regularly and ride but it's not always the same time or place and we can't seem to plan far enough in advance to make a monthly calendar. So if you're interested in riding with our group contact the people below to so that you can get the lastest information. To be added to our e-mail list contact me Abingdon Bicyclists If I don't respond check with the contacts for each type of ride listed below.
See the notes at the end of this page for definitions of pace and comments on weather.
The schedule is organized into the following parts:
Weekend Rides --lists planned rides on weekends and holidays
Weekday Rides -- Currently we do not have any regularly scheduled morning and early afternoon rides during the week.
After Work Rides --lists the scheduled times and places for late afternoon rides
Ad Hoc Rides --lists potential rides that don't have a specifically scheduled time.
Currently a group of riders meet once each weekend for a Hard Moderate to Brisk paced ride. The typical distance is 40-50 miles but may be shorter or longer. Typically 5 to 10 riders show up. Routes are decided as we go. We regroup at major decision points.
The "standard" start is Sunday afternoon at 1 PM at the Texaco station near exit 13 from I-81. Threat of rain may cancel the ride or significantly reduce the ridership. Contact Dennis Sutherland if you want more information on these rides.
I'll gladly add schedules and contact information for other Abingdon area riders who want different paced rides.
After work rides held each Tuesday and Thursday. The rides usually begin at 5:30 and will get you home before sundown. The goal is to get in about 2 hours of riding. If you're interested contact Dennis, or Bobby for details. These rides will continue until Daylight Savings Time ends.
Touring in SW Va and adjacent areas. Beginning in May I'm interested in doing some short tours in southwest Virginia and adjacent states. Daily mileage would be 50 to 70 miles. Nights would be spent in motels. Routes would be selected to visit one or more areas of scenic or historic interest. I'm looking for companions on any of these rides. If you're interested in joining me contact Rich .
Fast training rides. We have some racer's in the area. If you would like to join their training rides contact Robbie, 676-2876. Typical weekend ride when they are not racing is 88 - 105 miles at a 18-22 mph pace. Weekday rides vary in length and pace.
Weekday LM rides. TBD
The following are the definitions of pace are used in the calendar.
SL- Slow leisurely: below 10 mph. Stops as needed.
L-Leisurely: 10-12 mph. Stops as needed
LM- Easy moderate: 12-14 mph. Regroups approx. every 30 min
M- Moderate: 14-16 mph. Regroups approx. every 45 min.
MB- Hard moderate: 16-18 mph. Regroups approx. every hour. For experienced riders.
B- Brisk: 18-20 mph. Stops infrequently.
S- Strenuous: faster than 20 mph. Stops infrequently.
The average speeds in these definitions are based upon flat terrain with no wind. With the typical terrain around here add 3 to 4 mph to your average speed to find your pace.
Normally rain, cold temperature (below 40?), or high temperature (above 95?)will cancel the ride or at least decrease the number of riders. If in doubt contact the ride sponsor.
