Pocket PC Yinghan
The popular Palm OS Yinghan talking dictionary software finally has arrived on Windows

Please note that this version only has been tested with Windows Mobile 5.0 or later Pocket PC devices. It is not likely to work with previous versions of Pocket PC or Smartphone devices.

Software Registration
Yinghan is a shareware. The software can be tried with full feature for free.
Unregistered installation will have a 'nag' message displayed periodically. Registered version will remove the nag message.
The registration fee is currently at a great discount for limited time.

About 2.5MB storage space is required. Depending on how you install the
software, you may need to storage space for interim installation related
file space.
Your PDA must have the ability to display Chinese characters in order to see
the output of Yinghan correctly. The following are some of the ways your PDA
can acquire the ability to display Chinese characters:
- If you own an English version of the PDA and just want Yinghan to display Chinese correctly, install a Unicode Chinese font package for Window Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC. One is fontpatch.cab. You can search the web for more. The advantages are that they are usually free and have a fairly turnkey installation process, i.e., no hand editing the registry. The disadvantages are limited choice of font style and installation option, e.g. installing the font on a memory card.
- If you prefer to have the general Chinese IO capabilities and don't mind paying for it in the price and memory space, purchase a Chinese IO software. CE Start and Monster are two such software. You can search the web for more. The main advantage is that
these are complete Chinese IO package, not just Chinese display. There are a lot of additional features. The disadvantages are the cost, the size of installation, slower overall system performance, some interference with non-Chinese functions.
- If you already own a Chinese version of Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC, you are ready to use Yinghan! These devices have
the Chinese IO built in. You do not have to do anything.
- If none of above choices suits you, then you might consider installing a Unicode Chinese font manually. See Installing a Chinese Font File section for more detail.

This process requires registry editing. It is not recommended for the
inexperienced. We provide the info as a courtesy to people who are
strongly motivated and experienced with registry editing. Hint: if you do
not know how to edit registry on a Pocket PC, you probably should not try
this.
The main motivation for doing this is that you can choose the font file you
like and install to a place you prefer.
We can only outline the process. It is assumed that you have access to registry
editing utility, able to locate the font file you want, and know how to edit
the registry. If not, please do not attempt this.
Here is the sketch for installing a Chinese font:
- Copy the font file to the font directory. The default font directory
could be \Windows or \Windows\Fonts on your PDA.
- Add the registration path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\FontLink\SystemLink and then add a string key value with the name equal to the current font and value equal to font file location and font name.
For example, the font file in the fontpatch.cab is named subglobe.ttf, and it is located in \Windows and its name is UniSun, and you want link this Chinese font file to Tahoma font. The key name should be Tahoma and the value should be \Windows\sunglosimhbe.ttf,UniSun.
- Font linking info is loaded during boot time so you need to do a soft reset. But since Windows Mobile caches the registry you need to make sure the
registry changes are flushed. The most reliable way is to change something in the Setting and tap Ok. (Try Menu changes.) Then do a soft reset and the Chinese font should be in effect.
- Extra credit: Moving the font files to memory card. This should be only
considered if you are running low on main memory storage. This is highly NOT recommended because the intrusive actions required. The following is a sketch for doing this:
- You should record everything you are changing in case you have to back out
the changes
- Change the default font path since you are moving the font files. The font
files need to be together. Create the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\FontPath. And then add a string key value to this key with key name
equal to FontPath and key value equal to the memory card font location.
- Move or copy all font files to the font location.
- Perform a soft reset described above.
- Verify that the font relocation actually worked. If verified, you can
delete the font files from their previous location. Windows Mobile may not like you deleting the font files. It may complain about sharing violation.
First rename the files' extension so they are no longer recognized as font
file. Perform soft reset to verify everything is still in working order then
delete the renamed files.
