1. There are 10,000 distinct religions in the world located in 238 nations and territories.
2. Christianity is the world's largest religion. Islam is the second largest and growing.
3. Nearly 1/2 of the world's people are listed as Atheists or non-religious, but this number has
fallen some since the fall of communism.
4. Hinduism has grown a little since 1900.
5. Buddhism has declined.
6. The biggest change is the emergence of the 386 million Independent Christians; they have no formal ties to the 3 Christian categories or Catholicism. They style themselves as Post-Demoninations.
7. Roman Catholics claim ?? Billion people, but most are inactive.
8. Protestants now rank the 3rd largest Christian group with 342 million; 215 million Orthodox; 80 million Anglicans.
9. There's a rise of Pentecostal numbers, who believe in receipt of "gifts" of the Holy Spirit, including speaking in tongues. There's similar increases in Charismatic in the traditional denominations; and neo-charismatics in Independent Churches. (Both Pentecostal and Charismatic movements encompass 524 million believers)
10. In 1900 Christianity was 81% white--Now in 2000 it is only 45% white (because places like Africa went from 9.2% Christian in 1900 to 45.9% in 2000).
11. Northern Americans are 84.2% Christian; 1.4% Muslims; 9.7% Atheist or non-religious; 4.6% all others.
12. Christianity has 33,830 denominations in the world.
13. Asia is only 8.5% Christian and 19.8% Atheist or non-religious.
