STEPHEN COLLINS FOSTER

He is known for such familiar songs as "My Old Kentucky Home," "Swanee River," "Oh Susanna," and "Camptown Races." His deep sentimental mood especially shows in his song "Beautiful Dreamer." Some of Foster's songs have become part of American cultural heritage. Foster's songs are moving in their sincerity.

He had little musical training, but he had a great gift of melody. At age 6, he taught himself to play the clarinet. He could pick up any tune by ear.

He was a poor businessman, because of his ADD. He sold some of his famous songs for little money, perhaps because of low self-esteem. Like most ADD-ers, he was weak in marketing. He perennially struggled with alcoholism and poverty. He died young of alcoholism (lived from 1826 to 1864). The year he died was when he wrote "Beautiful Dreamer."
