Doulas and Dads "Woman in active labor should receive continuous, close support from an appropriately trained professional. This support should include continuous presence, encouragement, and comforting touch. This support does not replace the role of family support, but is complementary to it." A Policy statement of the SOCG Online 31 July 1997 Fathers also need support during this exciting time. When told that their role is to be the coach, they may feel pressured to perform in such a way that doesn’t seem natural. A father’s love and support during this time is invaluable and the doula respects that. When a doula is present, the father is able to perform within his comfort zone; providing love and comfort to his partner. I work with very closely with fathers/partners to help them feel comfortable with the birth experience. I will get to know both of you well, and understand the depth to which you as partner would like to be involved. I have had partners take on all sorts of roles, from a regular "coach" watching from the sidelines to actually catching their own baby... and everything in between. I will at no time interfere with the bonding between you. I have several partners who would be happy to speak with you if you have any questions or concerns in this area. The Dad/Doula Dynamic for Birth Early labor at home: The doula can stay with the mother while the father takes care of last minute necessities. The doula helps you both understand the early stages of labor and may be helpful in determining when to head to the place of birth. Active labor, transition, and pushing: The doula and father can relieve each other for eating, bathroom breaks, etc.. If procedures or interventions are suggested, the doula can remind you of your options and alternatives. The doula offers informational support so father and mother can make decisions together. Typically, the father will discuss any decisions with the midwife or doctor, not the doula. Fathers and doulas both provide close physical comfort measures for the mother, such as back rubs and counter-pressure during contractions. Doula serves as your guide should your path toward birth take a turn from the norm. Cesarean Births Immediately after the birth, the doula can stay with the mother while the incisions are repaired. This allows the father to be with the newborn while he/she is taken to the warming area for procedures. After the Birth The doula typically stays until the baby has latched on for his first nursing session. The doula will then leave so that you may bond as a new family. |
