Morning
Mist on Kylemore Abby
by Edmund Sullivan
As the story goes, around
1860 a wealthy young Dublin couple roaming
through the Irish countryside on their honeymoon, became breathless at
the sight of this scenic spot the Irish call, "Lake of the Big Wood".
To the happy bride, this corner of the world was bliss. "A dreamland"
she called it. They spent the day there, all alone, enjoying the break
in their journey with all of nature before them. A few weeks later the
young woman discovered she was in" a family way." The couple were so
overjoyed when they realized the child had been conceived at Kylemore
that the young groom pledged to build a huge castle on that very spot
to create the perfect dreamland for his bride. And so it stands, 70
rooms of high 19th Century luxury -- now an abbey housing a community
of Irish Benedictine nuns who pray for the young woman daily.
