A Credo of Personal Values by Alan Hansen

 

I will accept responsibilities and challenges with courage, dedication, and conviction.

I will go first and lead from the front. I will be passionate about fulfilling my charges. I will be a standup guy. I will take risks. I will push myself out of my comfort zone. I will learn from my mistakes. I will embrace change. I will continually sharpen my saw through reading, pursuing and engaging in formal continuing education opportunities, and seeking feedback from those close to me. I will continue to learn and grow each day of the rest of my life. I will treat every job and duty as an adventure. I will treat every new assignment as a "fresh start," even if it isn't. I will be the kind of person that says, "Bring it on!"

I will love my family, friends, co-workers, constituents, and fellowmen through service.

I will show my sincere feelings of sympathy and concern for others through helpful, supportive, cooperative, and beneficial actions and behaviors. I will strive to make others successful in achieving their goals. I will look for opportunities to serve others. I will go out of my way for others. I will be genuinely interested in other people. I will smile at others. I will remember other people's names and use them often. I will encourage others to talk about themselves. I will serve my constituents, and not the other way around.

I will exude integrity by doing what I say and saying what I do.

I will set an example of good leadership for others. I will serve as a model of integrity and honesty. I will never ask anyone to do something that I would not be willing to do myself. I will never be considered a hypocrite. I will care as much about the means as the ends. I will admit it when I am wrong quickly and emphatically.

I will create a team atmosphere with clear shared goals, open communication, mutual respect, and a shared sense of responsibility.

I will help others in the team to begin with the end in mind. I will help others to understand the importance of clearly defined objectives. I will foster open communication by first seeking to understand, then to be understood. I will show respect for other people's opinions. I will find common ground. I will try to see other people's viewpoints. I will appeal to the nobler motives, such as participating in a project or movement that enhances and changes lives for the better. I will speak positively. I will build relationships that are founded on trust, confidence, and mutual respect. I will build consensus through the sincere inclusion of others and their ideas. I will think win-win. I will speak in the third person and use the word "we" more than I speak in the first person and use the word "I." I will celebrate and recognize the achievements of others and the team.

I will make a positive difference in the lives of those around me and the causes in which I work.

I will be a doer. I will be someone that gets things done. I will be a force for positive change. I will challenge the process. I will question the status quo. I will go out and find things that need fixing. I will be one who says, "Lead, follow, or get out of the way!"
