The Hutchings side of the family previous to my grandfather Leonard Van Hutchings is relatively unknown. I asked his son (my uncle, Leonard Hutchings), but he said his father did not talk much about his past. From stories told by his wife (my grandmother), I gather he was a "black sheep" who left home at an early age, was a cowboy for awhile, drifted around, met and married Tessa E. Riley, who was probably still living with her parents in Missouri. The 1910 census found HUTCHINGS, LEONARD age 23 from Illinois in Jackson county, MO. Previous census do not find him. The 1920 census found him age 34 in Sacramento county, CA. My grandmother said they tried farming near Sacramento (probably in Galt, where my father was born in 1920) for awhile, and also raised turkeys. But things did not work out, so they moved to Berkeley, where he finally ended up working for Colgate, Palmolive, Peet (now Colgate) until he retired. I remember he used to roll his own cigarettes. His sons, my uncle Leonard and father Howard went to Berkeley High, where they met my mother.

If you have any information on Leonard Van and his lineage, please let me know. I have the ancestors of my 3 other grandparents back to the 1700's and before, but the Hutchings line stops at my grandfather.
I use the computer program Family Tree Maker on a PC to organize all the information I have on my relatives.
