Pet Project

1989

This was a commissioned portrait of well-known southern SF fan and power grid engineer, "Uncle" Timmy Bolgeo.   It is not a great likeness -- he was not allowed to sit for me.   Tim is far more robust than I could have captured at the time.

I remember studying baroque music counterpoint around the time of this piece.   I wanted to try creating something like a fugue visually.   The shape and line gestures of the big reactor cooling towers are repeated throughout.   I also remember thinking more than before about composing parts of the picture beyond the confines of the picture plane, attempting to control eye movement with imaginary lines that curve and intersect outside of the frame.

By the way, that's not a wadded up napkin on the table as it appears.   It's a recessed tray of melting ice cubes.   It doesn't show up well at this resolution.
