Was Abraham Lincoln a Christian? A very good question! Some would say no, because he never joined a church. Of course, joining a church does not make one a Christian. Lincoln was an avid reader of the Bible. Knowing the Scriptures does not make one a Christian, either. Satan knows them better than we do. Lincoln never, to our knowledge, came right out and professed a belief in Jesus Christ as his savior. So, what we must do then, to answer this question, is to look at his actions in terms of what he did and what he said and wrote. Generally, his actions were those of a Christian man. He sinned, just as all of us do. We know he prayed regularly, especially after Willie died in 1862. We can see from his prolific use of Scripture in his speeches and writings that the Bible had a considerable influence on his decision making. Without getting into an extremely long-winded description of examples, we believe that, based on what we know of Lincoln, he died a Christian.
