Introduction

New and innovative tools are often patented, and the corresponding patent documents can provide interesting background on the development of the tool. The patent will often include a discussion of the problem to be solved, and may cite other prior patents of interest. Having the patent document may also help to determine the date of manufacture for a tool, especially if the tool has a "Pat. Pend." (or equivalent) marking.

However, sometimes it can be difficult to determine the relevant patent number, especially for older tools that are outside of the searchable range of patent records. For example, there is no straightforward way to find a patent number just from the name of the company that makes an item. Even a knowledge of the patent date (a common way of citing patents on older tools) may still require looking through a large number of document images.

In this page we present a table of patents for hand tools and related items, selected mostly from the early years of the 20th century. The patents were chosen for a number of reasons; some were especially innovative or influential, others were assigned to companies of interest, and some were found on particular tools in the Alloy Artifacts collection.

The information in the patent table was obtained from patent documents maintained by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), with editorial additions based on known uses of the patents.

Patent searches were done most conveniently using the Google Patent Search, which offers full-text searching on (almost) all of the historical patents. Google recently digitized all of the older patent documents, thereby enabling full text searching that previously had been available only for relatively recent patents (e.g. 1970 or later).

Additional searches were done using the USPTO database at uspto.gov and freepatentsonline.com. These sites allow only restricted searches on the older patent documents, limited to the patent number, class, and issue date.

Another source for patent information is provided by the DATAMP database, a specialized collection of machinery and tool patents maintained by volunteers. Earlier editions of DATAMP were more focussed on machinery patents, but recently more hand tool patents have been added.
