Mentoring Program
– Students from Canyon Del Oro and Ironwood Ridge High Schools enjoyed
tours and speaker presentations at Northwest Medical Center’s Rancho Vistoso
Outpatient Clinic. The tours and presentations are a collaborative
effort between Northwest Medical Center’s and Oro Valley Rotary’s Student
Mentoring programs. These programs help encourage future generations
to pursue careers in health care. The students received personalized tours of the facility’s Urgent Care, lab, radiology, CT/MRI, ultrasound and X-ray departments. They also viewed a virtual tour of the lobby and waiting areas of the new Northwest Medical Center Oro Valley. Paul Kappelman, CEO of Northwest Medical Center Oro Valley, spoke about his education, choosing a career in healthcare administration and the new Oro Valley hospital. Jim Denny of the Oro Valley Rotary Club spoke about the Vocational Rotary Scholarship program to assist the students with their educational goals. This academic year, the Oro Valley Rotary Club will host 23-Honors Program Interns from these two high schools. Each intern will have the opportunity during breakfast, and in some cases, the weeks after, to pursue career explorations with a professional in their field(s) of interest. Physician presenters consisted of a family physician, radiologist, pediatrician and physical therapist. These physicians were happy to describe their typical workdays, express what they like most about their jobs and answer the students’ many questions. Many of the students were anxious to know about the amount of education required for each specialty, the pros and cons of working in a hospital versus a private practice and the new technologies available in each field. ****
