Practical Karate 5:  Self-Defense for Women by Donn F. Draeger and Masatoshi Nakayama is available at amazon.com.
Angels Don't Know Karate by Debbie Dadey and Marcia Thornton Jones is #23 in the Adventures of the Bailey School Kids.  The mystery is what's the story behind the new Karate teacher who seems to be guarding kids and granting wishes.  Is she an angel?
There is a national kid's newsletter called Martial Arts Messenger that you can get through After- School Martial Arts programs.  To find out if one is in your area, you can e-mail info@amerinational.com.

The Karate Way by Sensei Gary Hellman, Random House Children's Books
KarateWay.jpg (4304 bytes)  This is the inspiring story of a kid who develops confidence through Karate training.  The kid is a boy, but there are girls in the dojo who are his friends.  When a little boy joins a Karate class, he discovers a whole new way to look at the world.  From dealing with bullies to succeeding in school to learning a new sport -- living life the Karate way makes all the difference.  Gary Hellman holds a fifth-degree black belt and has been training in the martial arts for over 25 years.   He is currently the head instructor at Tiger Schulmann's Karate in Clearwater, Florida.
Online Karate Video Catalog - Sensei Anita Bendickson and colleague bring top level instruction in the art of traditional Japanese Shotokan Karate right into our living room.  You can also download free video clips from the site.
Karate Handbook by J. Allen Queen (Sterling Publishing Co., Inc.) - This book is out of print, but we found it in our library.  It contains illustrations that include girls and women.

CDROM Kenpo Karate Tutor (www.niltiak.com/kkt.htm) - While learning from a live Sensei is clearly the best way to learn, this CDROM tutor might be useful as a reminder.  The site contains information about the CDROM (including screen shots and a description of the contents) and lets you order it.

Century Fitness (www.centuryfitness.com) - This site has clothing and gear for women and for kids.
Quality Performers (www.qp-sport.co.nz) - This is a good source of chest protectors for women and girls.
Amber Boxing Gear (www.ambersports.com) - A source of boxing gear, including crotch protectors.
SheGear (www.shegear.com) - This has general sports equipment for women and girls.  There isn't much here for martial arts, but you can send them a note requesting it.  There are some good links to other women's sports sites.
Just Her Sports (www.justhersports.com) - This is a female sporting goods store.  There isn't much for martial arts, but you can send them a note requesting it.

General Information

New2.gif (1251 bytes) Physical Therapy Magazine wrote a great article on the martial arts and physical therapy connection (in the May 1st, Vol. 10, Issue 5).   It included a special needs profile that took a look at a 17-year-old girl who practices Karate.  It is very inspiring.
New2.gif (1251 bytes) www.wenessia.com is an excellent portal to Martial Arts sites.  You can search by style and various keywords.  You can also find information about definitions, a gallery, and special reports and spotlights.
Here is a great article for moms taking Karate to be with their kids.  It's called "10 Tips from Karate Mom."

Kenpo FAQ (kempofaq.homepage.com) - This site provides a nice list of things you might want to know about Kenpo (or Kempo) Karate, including its history, information about traditions, and so on.
CyberDojo (www.ryu.com/CyberDojo) - Slightly out of date in events, etc., but it has an excellent definitions list, information about weapons, and other interesting links.

Official Organizations

New2.gif (1251 bytes) The National Women's Martial Arts Federation (nwmaf.org) - This is an organization of women martial artists.  It exists to promote the involvement of women and girls in the martial arts.

New2.gif (1251 bytes) The west coast has a big women's martial arts organization called the Pacific Association of Women Martial Artists (www.pawma.org).  They can provide leads to girl's karate classes.

Budo Kai (http://www.concentric.net/~Budokai/index.htm) - This is an organization of scholars and practitioners interested in sharing information about the history of the martial arts.

USA National Karate-do Federation (www.usankf.org) - The USA NKF is a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee, and every World Championship Medal won by the United States over the last 10 years has been won by a USA-NKF athlete.

American Amateur Karate Federation (www.aakf.org) - The Traditional Karate organization began in 1961 with the AAKF.  It has conducted annual regional and national championships, as well as many developmental programs.  The AAKF hosted the the first world scale events in the history of Traditional Karate with a tournament in 1968 between the U.S., Europe, Asia, and the Pan American countries.

American Kenpo Karate International (www.akki.com) - In their description, they say "The American Kenpo Karate International Association welcomes all martial artists interested in expanding their education and perpetuating their skills into the future. Our purpose in the A.K.K.I. is to preserve Mr. Parker's art of American Kenpo, as well as continue to create, innovate and perpetuate the ever changing, fascinating and magical art of Kenpo."

Worldwide Kenpo Karate Association (www.wkka.org)

Shotokan Karate-do International Federation (www.csun.edu/~hbcsc302/oath.html) - This Federation was founded in December, 1977 by Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa.  It has over 1,700,000 active members representing 72 countries.

USA Karate Home Page (www.usakarate.org) - This is the home page for the USA Karate Federation, with their history, and team and membership information.  It also includes links to pictures of women participating in past championships and some women in their hall of fame (which was under construction when last checked).
