Breastfeeding

Did you know that babies who are not breastfed or who are minimally breastfed have a higher incidence of illness and disease, including allergies, childhood cancer, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS or cot death)? And women who do not breastfeed or who breastfeed minimally have a higher incidence of illness and disease, too, including breast and ovarian cancer, anemia, and osteoporosis. Because of the vast amount of research demonstrating the many risks of formula feeding to mothers and their children, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends at least one year of breastfeeding and the World Health Organization recommends at least two years of breastfeeding. Specialized information and support are critical to parents of children with special needs--but they can be hard to find. In addition to searching the Internet, talk with health professionals and other parents, visit your library and do a search of their resources... Do not stop until you find what you, your child, and your family need. Here are a few of the many written resources that parents of children with special needs may find helpful. Each is a source of information, support, and yet more resources. While no one may fully understand your particular situation, you are not alone.
