DPA 4011's DPA 4022's DPA 4022's & 4011's DPA Home Page Recorders In Use Today Nagra IV-S analog reel to reel Nagra IV-S using 3M 967 1.0 mil tape (1800 ft.) @ 7 1/2 ips, good for about 49 minutes. The 3M tape is no longer made. Also still using the Sony TC-D5M. Cassettes are Sony CD IT PRO 100 minute chrome cassettes. Masters recorded only on side "A", side "B" is not used. The TC-D5M and cassettes are no longer made. Sound Devices 722 Hard Drive Recorder as of February 1, 2008. Sound Devices 722 Home Page Nagra IV-S Home Page Old Analog Recorders First concert recorded on a Sony mono with the pop-up condensor mic. The next two concerts on a JVC boombox mono. The first (Trower) with the condensor mic, the second (Nektar) with an external Radio Shack mic. Then the classic Technics RS-646DS RS 646DS recorded shows from (Jan. 1978 to Dec. 1978) and Technics RS-686DS RS 686DS from (Jan. 1979 to Nov. 1981). Sony TC-D5M TC-D5M first used Nov. 1981 to the present. Many other Sony TC-D5M,s were used including the TC-D5PROII. Nagra IV-S reel to reel, April 1997 to the present. Microphone Cable Van Damme OFC microphone cable with Deltron UK XLR connectors. The direction of the wire has been taken into account. (i.e. With or opposite of the writing on jacket) Van Damme Home Mic Power Two Denecke PS-1A 48 volt phantom power boxes 2/2004 to 9/2004, TC-D5M cassette recorder. Stopped using mic power for the TC-D5M. Switched to Nakamichi CM-300 microphones as of 9/2004. Before the Denecke's was the AKG B18 w/ the 48 volt adapter (A48). The Nagra has various built in phantom power voltage. Denecke PS-1A Home Picture Audiotech Table Stand A single component stand made for audio gear that is very effective. (No longer made.) Audiotech Stand Analog Preamp All analog recordings first go through the Naim Audio NAC-52 Pre-amplifier before going to the cdr burner. This part of the chain is crucial to keep integrity of the sound. NAC 52 Preamp Supercap Power Supply Interconnect Naim Audio Home Interconnect Cable From recorder to preamp to cdr burner, Chord Company cable that Naim audio has made for their specifications. Direction is already marked by the company with an arrow from source to destination. Chord Co. Home Page CDR Burner Marantz CDR 600 (all Philips made) stand alone burner.This Marantz CDR-600 mkII (Philips) unit set the standard. Not a more musical CDR recorder has been designed. The first & best (No longer made.) All of 1977 to half of 1981 were recorded to the Tascam CDR-W2000 stand alone burner. This burner was in use from July 2000 to April 2003. From April 2003 to the present everything is mastered to the Marantz. Blank CDR's Taiyo Yuden 74-ZY for mastering hi-resolution recordings, these gold satin 74 minute cdr’s are the most faithful to its input. I tested over 15 blank cdr’s in a very controlled experiment. Back in print. 74 ZY TaiyoYuden silver 74 minute cdr’s are generally used for sending out. CDR Duplicator Microboards StartRec 400 Professional Audio cdr duplicator. StartRec 400 This unit has one reader with four recorders. ALWAYS DUBBED AT 1X REAL TIME SPEED. (No longer made.) Also have second system using three Plextors 40/12/40S drives. Source drive plays at 4X to hard drive. Two Plextors record from hard drive at 1X speed. Dubbing Chain All components are on there own Audiotech stand. No components are “stacked” on each other. AC Power Outlets All components are plugged in their own dedicated 20 amp circuit run with 10 gauge stranded wire. Wire is run from outlets to the breaker box with no splices. Dubbing Component Preparation Before dubbing, what ever recorder is chosen (7 or 8 in all), the recorder power supplies are kept plugged in for a minimum of 72 hours. The recorder kept in pause for about one hour. The Naim Pre-amp, Marantz Burner and the Microboards duplicator are kept on 24/7. Cassette Playback Calibration If using a different playback machine other then the original, the tape head alignment and speed is accurately adjusted. Live Music Concert Recordings
