ABSTRACT

Organizations increasingly rely on computing and intelligent networking infrastructures connected to Internet as keystones to their operations. Although the use of this technology provides many advantages, the Internet poses a unique set of vulnerabilities. Security attacks, such as worm and virus attacks, ID theft, and espionage, are examples of threats encountered daily by various organizations.

Against this backdrop, it is clear that security is one of the most important Information Technology (IT) concerns today. Security forensics is a discipline to identify the attackers and document their activity with sufficient reliability to justify appropriate technical, business, and legal responses.  The discipline involves identification, preservation and analysis of evidence of security attacks. Forensic activity takes place in a complex, legal and social context which must be understood in its entirety to fully appreciate its power and value.

This short course provides an overview of security forensics and addresses some of the technological and legal issues involved. Topics covered under the technological aspect include: phases of forensic investigation, evidence collection process, preparing clients for data collection, host and network-related evidence, hidden evidence, and evidence analysis and presentation. Several case studies including Email Forensics and Web/Internet Forensics, will be presented.

Target Audience: This short course is intended for System Engineers, Managers, Industry Professionals, Product Managers, marketing & sales professionals who want to understand current technologies, standards, tools and techniques.
