ABSTRACT

The Internet is undoubtedly the modern day Global Information Superhighway enabling communication among people and organizations across the globe and supporting all types of services and applications. The ubiquity and enormous success of the Internet are based on the open communication architecture and its constantly evolving and adaptable suite of communication protocols collectively referred to as TCP/IP.

This 2-day course will provide a clear understanding of the architecture and major protocols of the TCP/IP suite, and how they work.

The particular protocols covered in the course, at appropriate levels of details, include the network/internet layer protocols IP, ICMP, the transport layer UDP and TCP, and the protocols supporting various applications: DNS for name translations, Telnet for remote sessions, FTP for file transfer, SMTP and MIME for e-mail, HTTP for web surfing, and SNMP for network management.

The details of how TCP/IP can operate with different networking technologies ranging from point-to-point links, various types of LANs and WANs (e.g., Ethernets, X.25, ISDN, Frame Relay, ATM, SONET/SDH) will be provided. A brief discussion of Internet routing will conclude the discussion.

The emphasis will be on protocol concepts and operations, rather than on their software implementations.
