ABSTRACT
The new generation Internet Protocol IPv6 is designed to provide a much larger address space than the current generation IP protocol (IPv4). At the same time, IPv6 supports many additional services such as auto-configuration, increased security, and Quality of Service (QoS). IPv6 specifications also outline a well-designed strategy for transitioning from IPv4 to IPv6. Many vendors are increasingly supporting IPv6 in their product portfolios.
This short course is intended to provide a fast-paced technical overview of IPv6 and its features. We begin by outlining the need for a next generation IP. We then describe the IPv6 addressing architecture and issues. Next we cover the details of the IPv6 packet format, different options and header extensions, and the operation of IPv6. We then discuss the auto-configuration and security features of IPv6. We then outline some of the important extensions/modifications that have been made to companion protocols such as ICMP and DNS for supporting IPv6. Finally we conclude with a discussion of various approaches to transitioning from IPv4 to IPv6 and issues of interoperability in a mixed environment of IPv4 and IPv6.
