After purchasing our camper on July 24, 2004, we decided to immediately try out our new Starcraft 19CK hybrid camper. We left PECO, ate lunch at the Farmer's Market, then traveled around 60 miles to Forsyth, GA, and checked in to the Forsyth, GA KOA Campground. The smiling owners, who were very friendly and helpful, greeted us. Since we were new to parking a camper, we requested a "pull-thru" site so that we would not become a spectacle trying to back our new camper in to our site. The campground had a nice pond with fish, ducks, and paddle boats. They had clean bath houses, a rally shelter, spacious sites, and a modest little camping store. The campground had several "permanents" as well. Our site had electricity, water, and sewer. After setting up our camper, we prepared supper, ate, then rested awhile.
Around 7pm, we then drove back to the Atlanta area to see the Laser, Light, and Fireworks Show at Stone Mountain. After the show, we then drove back to Forsyth, arriving at the campground around 1am. We were very tired and immediately went to bed.
It was a restless night as our stock camper bed did not offer us the comfort we needed to stay asleep. Also, it did not help that the campground was very near the interstate with traffic noise contributing to our sleeplessness. Being close to the interstate was the biggest negative to an otherwise pleasant stay. (To some, being close to the interstate could also be viewed as a positive aspect for convenience.)
We got out of bed around 7:30am, ate breakfast, walked around the campground, then readied the camper for a trip home. We ate lunch around noon and began our trek home shortly thereafter. Several hours later we arrived home safely. We had a challenging time backing the camper into our narrow driveway and was finally successful with the help of a neighbor.
We had a safe conclusion to our first camping trip. We learned that our vehicle's gas mileage dropped from around 20 mpg with no camper, to around 11 - 12 mpg with the camper attached...OUCH!!!
The camping bug had bit us. We already were thinking about our next camping adventure...
