Andrew and Beth Ann Blackburn's Camping Adventures:
Hamburg State Park

November 27 - November 30, 2008

It was the long Thanksgiving weekend so Beth Ann and I went camping at Hamburg State Park, near Mitchell, GA. Beth Ann and I really enjoy this State Park for camping. We left around 9:30am, Thursday, and arrived at Hamburg State Park around 3 hours later.

We briefly stopped by the Park Office.

Near the park office is a dam, a grist mill, a museum, and a rock crusher exhibit.

The Rock Crusher on display was manufactured in Kennett Square, PA. Coincidentally, that is where Beth Ann and I went on our first date.

As we proceded to the campground, we noticed that there was only a trickle of water going over the dam due to a lack of rainfall.

We pulled our camper in to site #14 and set up. This site has a wonderful view. (Our two favorite campsites at this park are #30 and #14.)

Our campsite was only a couple hundred feet from a play area. Numerous kids and adults alike were loud and very noisy in the play area. It was apparent that many of the campers were going to see the "Big Game" between Georgia and Georgia Tech.

Around 3pm we had our Thanksgiving Dinner consisting of ham, sweet potatoes, cole slaw, broccoli and carrots. For dessert we had apple pie with homemade ice cream.

As darkness fell, we sat outside. Mr. Heater provided warmth. While sitting around the propane heater, a nosey armadillo visited our site.

When we awoke Friday morning, there was a slight fog over the lake due to cooler temperatures. Beth Ann prepared a delicious breakfast. Later, we went to Sandersville and browsed through Walmart, then drove over to the Dairy Lane and ate chocolate sundaes.

We left Sandersville and travelled to a small town named Gibson. Signs in this small town indicated that they were having a "Winterfest Event" on Saturday. We planned to attend this event. On the way back to the campsite, we saw this political advertisement, which was located in front of a candidate's home.

We returned to our campsite, ate supper, then went outside. Clouds were moving in and the temperature dropped. We lit up "Mr. Heater" and also started a campfire to warm things up.

Forty minutes later it began to rain. We went inside the camper and retired for the night.

We woke up to a cold, miserable, wet, dreary day. It rained all day Saturday. Gibson cancelled their "Winterfest."

A chipmunk briefly visited our site before seeking shelter from the rain.

By Sunday, the rained had chased most of the campers away.

Plenty of firewood was left behind at the various campsites. I couldn't let those pieces of wood go to waste.

We relaxed and enjoyed the tranquility of this state park until around noon. We packed the camper and left the campsite around 1pm. As we were leaving, we noticed plenty of water going over the grist mill dam. This was a contrast to the trickle of water over the dam when we first arrived

We made it home safely after 4pm.
