For the western section, use the 'Western segment I-84' link at left. This description works with the eastern section of I-84. I-84 branches off the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90), through the heart of inland Connecticut, across southern New York and into the Pocono Mts of NE Pennsylvania. It acts, along with I-81, as a bypass of the major Northeast metro areas. Between that and the fact that it is one of the few non-tolled freeway routes out of New England, I-84 carries a lot of commercial traffic going between New England and points South or West of NYC. On the east end, I-84 connects to I-90 (the Massachusetts Turnpike) near Sturbridge, MA. On the west end, I-84 connects to I-81 and the north end of I-380 in Scranton, PA. IN MASSACHUSETTS STATE: I-84 follows a short, unremarkable north/south section of freeway from the MA Tpk into Connecticut. Interchanges are numbered consecutively in Massachusetts.
