"Annette's Climb" is an annual hike in the name of Annette Soares, a
victim of domestic violence, who lost her life in April 2002 at age thirty-nine. The hike is a metaphor for the struggle and climb Annette, like all victims, endured through abuse. The event and hike is an opportunity to build community while raising awareness of the far-reaching personal and economic destruction that result from domestic violence. Her brother, John Soares, began "Annette's Climb".
History: In 2002, John had planned his annual trip to hike and ski
Tuckerman Ravine on Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. The trip with his
good friends was scheduled for Saturday April 27, 2002, but this
expedition was not to be. On Friday, April 26 of that year, John
learned of the horrific murder of his only sibling and older sister,
Annette, at the hands of her abuser. Annette was a victim of domestic
violence. John's family and their world were forever changed. In 2006, Annette’s Climb, Inc.(ACI) was established and received its official non-profit status as a 501(c)(3) organization. In 2007, while continuing to support HAWC, ACI partnered with the North Shore Community College Women in Transition (WIT) Program which provides deserving women with the skills and support necessary to transition to college, career and life-changing possibilities. Annette’s vibrancy, energy, and life commitment to helping others have not ended with her passing. A yearly event has grown out of a single memorial to a lost sibling. Through all our efforts, Annette continues to help victims of domestic abuse find a way off of the mountain. |
