The Anson Family Web Page
Welcome to the Anson Family Web Page, dedicated to George Anson and Margaret Dinning Anson and their descendants.
We have put together this website to share the genealogical
information we have found about the family of George Anson and his
wife, Margaret Dinning Anson. In the past few years, we have gathered
birth records, baptismal records, census records, letters, and
published histories to piece together what we believe to be the most
thorough history of George and Margaret Anson to date. However, like
most genealogy research, this is an ongoing project, and we will be
adding to this site as our research progresses.
One of our goals is to compile a complete list of the descendants of
George and Margaret Anson. This list would be for genealogy purposes
only, and any descendants posted on this website would be limited to people
born before 1900.
Research Updates, as of July 3, 2002
1. Teresa's trip to Salt Lake City yielded much new information about
the Anson family and related families. Here's a sampling of what we
found:
An 1827 Wolverhampton Directory of Trades lists William Anson
(George Anson's father). He is listed as a cabinet locksmith living on
Salop Street. This information matches the entry for George Anson's
baptismal record. See our Graphics page for a copy of
George's baptismal record.
A search of the British Civil Registration Index has turned up
concrete birth dates for George and Margaret's children born in
England. The corresponding entries in the George Anson FAQ have been updated.
George Anson's probate record for late 1889 has been found. The
list of heirs includes Margaret, William George, Joseph, Henry,
George, John, and Eliza. Missing are children Granville (II), James,
and Samuel. A reasonable assumption is that they died before 1889.
We have located a death record, a will and probate records for
George's son, Edward F. Anson, who died in 1893. The probate records
are particularly interesting, as they indicate some animosity between
Margaret Anson and Edward's wife, Elma Powles, in dealing with Edward's estate.
As part of an effort to track all of the descendants of George and
Margaret Anson, we have looked through various census records from
1860 to 1920, but have by no means completed this task. The 1930
census was released only recently, which gives us another large
source to look through when it becomes available in our local
genealogy library.
2. We have recently found an excellent website on the history of
Wolverhampton, England -- George Anson's birthplace. The Wolverhampton
Archives and Local Studies website has made available a
transcription of the parish records for St. Peter's Collegiate
Church. While looking at the latest transcription updates for
St. Peter's baptismal records, we found two items of great interest:
Contrary to what we've stated in the George Anson FAQ, George
Anson did indeed have a sister Sophia, who was christened in June,
1808 -- not 1807 as was previously mentioned. We have corrected this
in the FAQ.
George's brother, William, is listed in this transcription with
both a christening date of March, 1812 and a birth date of May, 1810
(a birth date listing in christening records is a rarity).
3. We have received word from Wilbur Anson, the coordinator of the
annual Anson Family Reunion in Island City, Oregon, that this year's
Reunion was cancelled. Wilbur has assured us that there will be an
Anson Family Reunion in 2003, barring unforeseen circumstances. We
will keep everyone posted on reunion developments for next year.
