These awards are presented to an author and an illustrator whose complete works have made a lasting contribution to children's literature. The nominations are made by the National Sections of the International Board of Books for Young People (IBBY) and the winners are selected by an international jury of children's literature specialists. The awards are presented during the biennial IBBY Congress. The awards are made with the patronage of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and are supported by the Nissan Motor Co of Japan. Since 1966, this prize has been awarded to both an author and an illustrator. Prior to 1966, only an author award was presented.
