Favorite 100 Nonfiction Books in Translation Published in English Since 1900 |
![]() |
CounterPunch is a bi-weekly muckraking newsletter edited by Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair. In 2001 the editors compiled a list of their favorite 100 books of nonfiction first published in English in the 20th century. A year later they prepared this list noting that since the first list generated much commentary and debate they prepared this list of nonfiction books in translation published in English since 1900. "The titles are presented here in alphabetic order by author. In general, the rule was only one title per author. But we made two exceptions: for Foucault and Freud. Also some will note the inclusion of several books (I Ching, Marx, Kraft-Ebing) that were written prior to 1900. But our interest here is when they were published in English." There are actually 138 titles in this list.
