FOR CHILDREN'S LITERATURE - ILLUSTRATION 1987-2003 |
The first Governor General's Literary Award dates back to 1937, when it was first awarded by Lord Tweedsmuir, also known as John Buchan, author of The 39 Steps. After sixty years of recognizing and rewarding excellence, they have become Canada's premier literary awards. In 1959, The Canada Council assumed sponsorship of the awards, then known as the Canada Council Prizes for Literature. In 1988, The Canada Council Prizes for Children's Literature (text and illustration) were named the Governor General's Literary Awards.
