Winners of the first annual Massachusetts Book Awards were announced in a ceremony at the Boston Public Library on November 2, 2001. Awards were made in five categories: Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, Children's Literature and Children's Picture Books. The Awards ceremony for the second year were held at the Worcester Public Library on October 3, 2002.
To be eligible for the awards, books must have been published in their original format in the previous calendar year. They must have been written or illustrated by a Massachusetts resident or have been based on a theme of partricular significance to the Commonwealth.
