Beginning in the Spring of 2002, The Guardian, the UK's most popular newspaper began assembling a list of books to form the "Guardian Essential Library." Dozens of writers were and are being asked to choose 10 essential books from their respective fields. The Guardian began publishing these lists on June 1, 2002.
