About Me and Photography Home
Photography is my way of enjoying the beauty and wonder of the world through visual imagery. I am a business professional, which causes me to think in logical and practical terms, while photography gives me an outlet to be more creative and free of restrictions.
I developed an interest in photography when I was in college, and bought my first 35mm camera, a Minolta SRT 101 in 1976. To help me get started, I took a course in basic photography, in which I learned how to develop and print black & white pictures. This became my pride and passion (next to dating my wife), and while I was working diligently towards a degree in business, I found it far more enjoyable to make pictures than to study accounting and finance. In addition to a part-time job to finance my car, social life and hobby, my extracurricular activities included making pictures for the college newspaper and yearbook. A few of my favorite pictures from this era are on the 70s page.
After graduating college and getting married, my focus on my family, home and business career left me with very little free time, and while I never completely lost interest, photography was put on the “back burner” for a long time. Debbie and I took a lot of pictures of the kids as they were growing up, but these were mostly point-and-shoot snapshots without any emphasis on artistic quality and composition.
When the kids grew older, I took time to reacquaint myself with picture-making, but what really got me interested again was the advent of digital photography. To me, digital photography had the same creative appeal as the darkroom of years past, yet without the bother and fuss with the chemicals. I had my first roll of film digitally scanned in 1994, and had fun exploring the new world of digital picture editing. I bought my first digital camera, a Kodak DC4800 with 3.2 mega pixels in 2001, followed by the much more serious and sophisticated Canon EOS 10D with 6.3 mega pixels in 2003.
I soon discovered Photoshop, and began learning and exploring its many wonderful and powerful features. Some of my more creative images can be found on my Creative page. Some are better than others, I realize, but I am learning a lot through this experience.
In the Summer of 2003, Debbie, Mark and I took a two-week tour of Italy. I brought my Canon EOS 10D, two lenses and a .5-Gigabyte compact flash picture card. I took about 500 pictures, and could have taken more, but could only keep about 200 due to my limited digital storage. Some of my favorites are displayed on my Italy page.
Later in 2003, I joined the Stony Brook Camera Club in Norfolk, MA, which meets weekly and has enabled me to accelerate my learning experience through the help and advice of its many talented members and diversified content of its programs. I have entered into the club's monthly competitions and won several awards, although I think they were just trying to be nice to me. I have also attended several camera club conferences where I have had the great opportunity to photograph some very talented professional and semi-professional models. Some of these pictures are displayed on my Models page.
I am also a member of the Holliston Lions Club, currently serving as club Secretary, and through this membership I have met with several others who have similar interests in photography, whom I have also learned from and shared photography experiences with.
I have always enjoyed viewing and making pictures of people. In 2004, I took courses in Portraiture and Wedding photography at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). I have a special interest in both formal and informal portraits and also enjoy taking pictures at weddings and other events. I have done some work on my own and also have worked with professional photographer, Jamie Holland, proprietor of Forever Fine Photography (and also fellow Lions Club member) in Holliston MA. Some of my own portraits are displayed on my Portraits page.
I also like doing scenic and macro photography. Some of this work can be found on my Scenic and Macro pages.
My pictures are displayed on several other public websites, including PhotoSIG, PhotoNet and One Model Place.
Thank you for taking time to read about me and view my web pages. I am enjoying my photographic journey, and I hope that you enjoy it also.
