Tramping (hiking in Kiwi) in NZ is a something everyone should try. The country is beautiful and the people are great. Your first stop should be the Vistor's Information Center(VIC). Those folks can take care of all your travel needs including transportation, a place to sleep, and maps. For those of you actually hiking, you need to head over to the local Department of Conservation(DOC) office. They can tell you specifics about tramps and this is the place to purchase hut tickets or an annual hut pass. They also sell maps.

I tramped in two places, the Banks Peninsula Track in Akaroa and an overnight trip up to Arthur's Pass. Akaroa is about 1.5 hours SE of Christchurch.  Arthur's Pass is NW of Christchurch and a 2 hour drive from the city. Click here to see a map to get your bearings.
