AAAHH!  It seems that 1-Cam bows have a range of 175.  Thanks to Blodget on the Povar server for sending me this data.
I'm sure most of us have heard by now that there are new arrows in the game.  I'll update the site soon.

What's New, 12-11-2001

NEW BOW STAFF IS IN THE GAME.  You can now make make SHADEWOOD bows!  The bow staff material isn't mentioned in the Bowyer's Guide, but appears to be available from any bow parts vendor.  It's expensive (433 plat with unmodified charisma and faction from the vendor I found it on in Shadow Haven) and has a very high trivial value (reported > 235).  I failed 5x at skill 203 before succeeding on the rough one shown here (thanks to the Denmother from over at EqTraders for the shot of the other):

DUAL CAM DARKWOOD TRIVIAL FOUND!!  The Head Ogre Fletcher of All Norrath, Gorthag Bashinfletcher, has determined the triv value of dual cam darkwoods at 235.  AMAZING work!  Hats off and cheers to Gorth!

I'm kind of proud of my original guess at that trivial value - based on observed failure rates, I had predicted it to be  near 230.

What's New, 6-28-2001

Small change, thanks to AslanK of the Bertox server.  The mage-summoned Quiver of Marr was incorrectly listed as having only 4 slots.  The correct value is 6.

What's New, 6-20-2001

Hehe, Verant snuck one in on us!  At some point in a recent patch Verant added the capability to restring your bow!.  This is actually documented in (of all places) the fletching book that discusses arrow recipes, rather than the one with bow recipes, as one might have guessed.

Changing strings is easy.  You simply place a completed bow into the fletch kit along with the new string and hit the combine key.  Initial testing indicates that restringing appears to become trivial at skill 15, but interestingly, seems to ALWAYS succeed.

Added a link to the excellent EQ Traders site to the references section
Repaired the link to the Ranger's Glade
Added a short discussion of the new Fleeting Quiver to the Quivers section

What's New, 5-28-2001

Hooray!  Some excellent work by folks over at eqtraders.com has resulted in a possible breakthrough in the discovery of trivial values for darkwoods!  Gorthag Bashinfletcher has posted his results on the EqTraders message boards, and they look very interesting!  It appears that all darkwoods except compounds become trivial at 215, but compound darkwoods have a trivial value that is higher still.  If this turns out to be true, it will be a bit of a departure from the current prevailing theory that cams, which triv at 192, do not have an impact on the triv value of darkwood bows.  Apparently, the presence of the second cam has a higher triv value than one cam.
You can follow the discussion here.

Quivers are finally useful!  Added a short discussion about quivers.

What's New, 5-8-2001

Found a neat new bow, the Forlorn Bow, from Huntmaster Furgrrl in the Warrens.  Thanks to Juegar Siempre for sending me the new picture!

What's New, 2-17-2001

Check out this new item I just found!  It's a very rare drop, so be glad you can print the web version instead of camping this one...

Don't email and ask.  Just go here.

Another small change.  Not too much has changed in the world of archery and fletching lately.  Verant had indicated before Velious was released that they hoped to be able to update the other tradeskills, such as fletching, in much the same way they updated and added to the Jewelcraft and Smithing skills.  Perhaps we'll see some changes in the not too distant future?
Put up some screenshots of two new bows that have been found in Velious.  If you have other screenshots, please send them to me!
Added the locations of the bow and arrow parts fletching vendors in Thurgadin.
FLETCHING KITS CAN BE PURCHASED AT ANY VENDOR THAT ALSO SELLS BOW PARTS.  Hehe, I seem to have gotten a lot of email asking this lately, perhaps this will help.  It's obviously not covered very clearly in the text, or else I wouldn't get so many repeat requests for this information.

What's New, 10-14-2000

Small changes.  Made 202!
Moved the web page to a different ISP.  Of course, if you're reading this, you've already figured that out...

What's New, 9-22-2000

Wow!  The limit on fletching has been raised over 200, and data is beginning to come in!  At this point we know that (a) ceramic vanes and steel shafts are trivial at 202, (b) Trueshots are NOT trivial at 202, and (c) Darkwood is NOT trivial at 202.  Special thanks to Aurin, Arborealus Fletcher, and in particular Talisko Uisgebeatha, for going to the trouble of sending in the information as they discovered it.
Are steel shafts trivial at 201, or 202?  I need someone at skill 201 to check this (embarrassed look at still being skill 200).
The prospects for raising our collective fletching skills over 202 seem pretty grim - since all the arrows are trivial now, the only thing I'm aware of that would allow this would be Trueshots or Darkwood bows.  Ugh.  Remember how long it took to go from 199 to 200?  Can you imagine combining several hundred darkwood staves to get to 203?  Riiight....
One player on the E'ci server has been reporting to me that ceramic vanes and steel shafts are both trivial to him in the 180s, and to raise his skill he has been forced to use combinations of expensive components in order to create a non trivial arrow.  The obvious questions about possible reasons why this might only appear to be true have already been investigated, and it seems this fellow is experiencing something I've never heard of from anyone else.  So, has anyone else experience this type of behavior?  Please send me your specifics if you think you have related data.
Finally, Katorin has reported finding a Spectral Bow from a froglok hunter in Traks Teeth.  The data I have on this bow indicated that it dropped from Howling Stones, so either my initial data was wrong, or it drops in both, or it has been changed.

A major improvement in the determination of bow trivial values is presented here, courtesy of the sharp observations of several fletchers who postulated that just like arrows, perhaps bow complexity was driven by the complexity rating of the most complex component.  With this in mind, John Bashaw (Garulf Woolfetysh) has done some excellent research into this hypothesis and indeed confirmed exactly that.  Based on John's work, for the first time the trivial values for every bow combination are shown in the Bow Table.  Excellent work John, the fletching community owes you a debt of gratitude!

What's New, 8-12-2000

An update to the trivial value of the Shaped 1-Cam Oak bow, courtesy of Aldorian.
Added a brief discussion of the Spectral Bow, Bow of the Underfoot, Wind Saber, and Efreeti War Bow, courtesy of SoulstreakX, along with screenshots of the same.

What's New, 7-5-2000

A minor update to the bow trivial tables, courtesy of Jarrome and Dielzen
There are several new bows in the game which I don't have good screenshots for.  If you have a screenshot that contains the information and statistics about a bow which I don't have documented here, please send me a copy?  Thanks!

What's New, 6-19-2000

Added the bowyer and arrow merchants in Cabalis and The Overthere.  Thanks to Keldark for sending this information to me!

What's New, 5-21-2000

Updated the discussion on the effects of INTELLIGENCE and WISDOM with regard to increasing your fletching skill.
Added the bowyer and arrow merchants in the Kunard Firiona Vie zone to the bow and arrow vendor location lists.
Added a "Suggested Bow Selling Prices" paragraph.  I won't try to dictate prices to anyone - if you wish to sell for more or less, have at it!  But these prices are what I would consider to be fair prices to both the buyer and the seller, and are offered simply as a starting point for fletchers to use for consideration in setting their own prices.
I don't know if any of you have noticed, but the frequency of these updates coincides rather neatly with the frequency of server down times...sigh...

What's New, 5-16-2000

Corrected a few inaccuracies in the Arrow Table with regard to trivial levels of some of the higher damage arrow types.  Thanks to LeRoy Tabb for pointing this out!
Rough Elm trivial levels - what can I say?  I have emails from several folks, and they contain conflicting data.  I have adjusted the table to show all manner of Rough Elm (Hemp, Linen, and Silk) as trivial at 68.  This data tends to agree with MOST of the other reports I have, but nonetheless the real point is that I have conflicting data available to me on Rough Elm.  If you have additional data on Rough Elm trivial levels, please send it to me.
There are some tasty rumors of new bows out there being found in Kunark, and several of you have kindly sent me links to pictures of them.  As I get a bit more data, I'll update the appropriate paragraph in the Bows section to mention them.

Whats New, 4-21-2000

Thanks to Vilimar for nailing down the trivial level for Oak/Hemp at 168
Thanks to Ceinwein for nailing down the trivial levels for Elm/Hemp at 68, Elm/Linen at 70, and Elm/Silk at 70.  The fact that the Linen and Silk strings yield identical trivial values confirms a suspicion I've harbored that many of the more advanced bows have complexity levels which are NOT dependent upon the string type at all.
I have created a very simple excel spreadsheet containing the Bow, Arrow, and Cheapest Way to Fletch tables.  You can download it by going here.  Hopefully this will help anyone who might have been having difficulty printing this data for easy reference.

Whats New, 3-31-2000

Thanks to both Hatman and Neril for pointing out a rather silly error in the arrow component table (I had listed "Bladed Point" at the skill 102 level, rather than the correct "Hooked Point").
Several of you have kindly sent me word and excel documents containing the text and tables of this site, to help with the task of creating an easily downloadable and printable version.  Each of you have my sincere thanks!  I appreciate your time and commitment.  Now have I gotten closer to getting a downloadable version ready to go?  Uhhhh....well I've been actually playing a lot lately, and that leaves only so much time for website fussing...I'll get there.

Whats New, 3-18-2000

Further updates to the bow table trivial levels, courtesy of Bombastic, Tandaar, and Matt Drake.  Thanks folks!  The bow table is really starting to zero in on trivial levels.

Whats New, 2-29-2000

Discovered a rather embarrassing error in the Arrow Table.  Much of the data for damage 5 arrows and greater was in error (I hadn't correctly determined the lowest cost combinations).
Another update to the bow ash and oak trivial levels, courtesy of Puluvan, Oron Faskel, Mardi, Bombastic, and David Judd.  Thanks folks!
A few tweaks to the "Cheapest Way to Fletch" table, adding some Alternate arrows and removing others.
Many of you have asked me to make the tables more printer-friendly, and to make the entire document downloadable as word and excel files.  I'm not ignoring those requests, I intend to do them, I just haven't gotten around to actually doing it...!

Whats New, 2-15-2000

An update to the bow trivial level for Shaped Ash, courtesy of Azerik Bloodletter

Whats New, 2-12-2000

Further updates to the bow trivial levels.  Thanks to Hool, and Lance Campbell for the updates!
Added a few more gratuitous bitmaps here and there, including a picture of the rather rare "Larktwitter," courtesy of Fanadorn
Updated the arrow chart to take into consideration (1) lowest prices I can get with my best faction and charisma, and (2) the wrinkle in the model introduced with the magic arrows, whereby combining with a silver tip yields ten arrows rather than the usual five.  This little wrinkle leads to some bizarre pricing behavior for some of the higher damage arrows, but the fundamental effect is that the high damage arrows are a bit more affordable now.

Whats New, 1-21-2000

Magic arrows are in the game!  Until I get "The Arrow Table" reworked, please take that data with a grain of salt.  The fact that the new magic arrows are constructed 10 at a time instead of 5 will require me to update that table completely, since the effective cost of an arrow constructed using the new silver tips is half what it was.

Whats New, 1-15-2000

Updated the bow trivial levels again.  Thanks to Wolfrin Shadowstalker and Windroot Tahngarth for the new data!
Completely new and updated "Cheapest Way to Fletch" table
Updated the links section to other EQ boards
Added vendor locations for bows and arrows, as best I know them
Added a little self-congratulatory bitmap to the start of the page...

Whats New, 12-30-1999

Updated some of the trivial levels on the bow table.  Thanks to Tullaian of the Rangers Glade for the new data on oak staves!
