About two hours south of San Francisco bay is the Monterey bay. During the 1920's and 1930's schools of sardines swarmed the waters around this bay and a large number of canneries were set up and a booming economy was born in Monterey. This was the Cannery Row that John Stinbeck wrote about.

The waters cooled and the schools of fish moved to warmer waters. Most of the Canneries were abandoned and the town forgotten. Two things happened to save the town (three if you count Ft. Ord) Romantic Couples discovered Monterey as a get away and the Aquarium became known world wide for its exhibits. This brought a boom of tourists to the town. Cannery row became little trendy (over priced) tourist shops. Today Monterey is a nice, though trendy town south of San Francisco. It has been able to to retain some of its original charm though some of it has become packaged. Here are some of the pictures of the town. Photos of the Bay and wildlife are in another section.

I hope you enjoy the photos. Any comments, please E-mail me, .
